WhatsApp May Soon Let You Log Out Without Losing Your Data
As WhatsApp continues to expand its flexibility for users, a new feature spotted in a recent beta version of the app suggests that logging out might finally become an option, even on your primary device.

A Long-Awaited Logout Option
In a teardown of WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.17.37, Android Authority uncovered a new "Logout" option under the Settings > Account menu. Currently, WhatsApp doesn't allow users to log out in the traditional sense. If you want to stop using the app temporarily, your only real option is to uninstall it or delete your account. That could soon change.

The new feature offers three choices when logging out:
- Erase all data and preferences
- Keep all data and preferences
- Cancel
Choosing to erase will remove chats and data from the device, while selecting to keep data means your messages, media, and preferences will remain intact and instantly accessible upon logging back in.
Why This Matters
This logout function could be useful in a range of scenarios: taking a digital detox, switching to a secondary account, or simply stepping away from WhatsApp without losing chat history or uninstalling the app. It's a level of control that mirrors what apps like Telegram already offer and fills a longstanding gap in WhatsApp's feature set.
The "Keep data" option seems particularly useful-it lets you pause WhatsApp without the friction of reconfiguring everything from scratch when you return.
Still in Beta and Testing Internally
As of now, the logout feature is still in development and has not been released to the public. WhatsApp hasn't officially announced a timeline for its rollout. It's expected to arrive for beta testers first before making its way to the stable version.
