WhatsApp Users May Soon Be Able to Pay Electricity Bills, Water Bills, Rent, and More
WhatsApp is already a major player in digital payments in India, thanks to its UPI-based money transfer feature. Now, it looks like the platform could be expanding its financial services even further. According to a report by Android Authority, WhatsApp is testing a new bill payment feature that could bring it closer to competing with platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
The feature was spotted in an APK teardown of WhatsApp beta version 2.25.3.15, where a new "Bill Payment" section appeared in the app's interface. While the feature isn't active yet, its presence in the beta version suggests that WhatsApp is actively working on rolling it out.

What Bill Payments on WhatsApp Could Look Like
The leaked details indicate that WhatsApp is testing bill payment support for a variety of services, including:
- Electricity bills
- Mobile prepaid recharges
- LPG gas payments
- Water bills
- Landline postpaid bills
- Rent payments
If this feature goes live, users could pay their bills directly through WhatsApp, rather than switching between multiple apps for different services.
How This Could Change Digital Payments in India
Currently, WhatsApp Pay allows users to send and receive money via UPI, making it convenient for peer-to-peer transactions. However, for payments like utility bills and mobile recharges, users still rely on Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
If WhatsApp successfully integrates bill payments, it could become a one-stop platform for both communication and financial transactions. With over 500 million users in India, this feature has the potential to simplify digital payments for a massive audience.
When Will This Feature Be Released?
Since the bill payment option is currently in beta testing, it's unclear when-or if-it will be rolled out in the stable version of WhatsApp. However, given the platform's success with WhatsApp Pay, it wouldn't be surprising to see this feature become a key part of its financial services expansion in India.
