WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that brings text transcriptions to voice messages, addressing a common inconvenience for users who prefer reading over listening. This update is designed for situations where listening to a voice message isn't ideal, such as when you're in a noisy environment or if the message is too lengthy.

How Voice Message Transcripts Work

The voice message transcription feature converts spoken content into text, allowing users to follow conversations without playing the audio. WhatsApp ensures privacy by generating transcripts directly on the user's device, meaning neither the app nor its servers can access the content.

To enable the feature:

• Navigate to Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts and toggle it on.

• Select your preferred transcript language.

Once enabled, you can transcribe any voice message by long-pressing it and selecting the "Transcribe" option.

Supported Languages and Compatibility

Currently, transcripts support a limited set of languages:

• Android: English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.

• iOS 16: These are joined by French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic.

• iOS 17: Additional support for Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, and Thai.

As the feature rolls out globally, WhatsApp plans to expand its language offerings over the coming months.

Limitations of Voice Message Transcripts

While this feature is a welcome addition, WhatsApp acknowledges that transcripts may not always be accurate. Errors can occur due to:

• A mismatch between the voice message's language and the selected transcript language.

• Background noise or unclear speech.

• Unsupported languages.

Users encountering a "Transcript unavailable" message may need to adjust their settings or language preferences.

Gradual Rollout and Setup Requirements

The voice message transcript feature is being introduced globally over the next few weeks. Upon first enabling the feature, users must download the transcript language by selecting "Set up now" or "Wait for Wi-Fi" to ensure seamless functionality.
