WhatsApp Rolls Out Voicemail-Style Missed Call Messages, Animated Images, and More Features

WhatsApp is rolling out several new features ahead of the holiday season, focusing on easier calls, smarter Meta AI tools, and fresh ways to post updates. The Meta-owned app says these changes aim to help users share greetings, manage media, and stay in touch when calls are missed.

Among the biggest additions is Missed Call Messages, which turns unanswered calls into quick voice or video notes. Meta AI inside WhatsApp also gains upgraded image creation and new animation tools, while Status, Channels, video calls, and desktop chats receive smaller but noticeable updates.

Meta AI inside WhatsApp now uses new image generation model capabilities from Flux and Midjourney. The company says image quality has improved for tasks such as annual holiday greetings. WhatsApp claims a "huge" improvement when creating images, which is timed for the upcoming festive period.

There is also a new animation option for Meta AI creations. Users can turn any photo into a short video clip. The animation responds to prompts and messages typed in the chat. This is meant for quick creative posts and greetings, without needing separate editing apps or advanced skills.

WhatsApp New Features for Calls and Voice Chats

Missed Call Messages acts as a modern twist on voicemail. If a contact does not answer, callers can leave a short note linked to that call. Depending on whether it was a voice or video call, users can record either a voice message or a video note and send it with one tap.

The company described the change in a blog post, saying, "This new approach will make voicemails a thing of the past," while positioning the feature as a simple way to catch up with loved ones. The app now also prioritises whichever participant is speaking during group video calls, making conversations easier to follow.

Voice chats gain an extra social layer through new reactions. Users can react with options such as 'cheers!’ without stopping the conversation for others. These reactions appear during the voice chat session, letting people respond quickly while the audio discussion continues in the background.

WhatsApp New features for Media, Status and Channels

On desktop, WhatsApp adds a dedicated media tab that groups documents, links, and media across chats. This layout is designed to make old files easier to find. The appearance of link previews has also been refined, so shared webpages load with cleaner and clearer cards.

Status updates are expanding beyond simple photos, videos, and text. Users can now place music lyrics on their Status posts, add interactive stickers, or pose questions. Friends and contacts can respond directly to these question stickers, turning Status into a more conversational space.

Channels are also getting questions as a feature. Channel admins will be able to ask their audience for input and see responses arrive in real time. According to WhatsApp, this tool should help admins engage their followers on a higher level and collect quick feedback during busy news or event cycles.
