How WhatsApp Scam Alert works

Scam Alert is an optional setting, not a default filter. Users who receive a warning can either mark the sender as trusted or block and report the account. If they choose to trust the chat, they may also share the last five messages with WhatsApp to help improve detection accuracy.

Meta has described the feature as using an on-device machine learning model. That means message content is assessed locally for scam-like patterns. According to Meta, messages are not sent to WhatsApp, Meta or any third party for classification, and chats are not automatically reported.

This approach is important because WhatsApp’s core promise is end-to-end encryption. By running the warning system on the device, Meta is trying to add scam protection without changing how private messages are secured between sender and receiver.

Why the new WhatsApp feature matters

Scam messages on WhatsApp often target users through job offers, fake delivery updates, investment schemes, prize claims and impersonation attempts. In India, where WhatsApp is widely used for personal, business and community communication, even a small safety prompt can help users pause before responding.

For now, Android beta users who have received the feature can enable it manually through Settings > Account. Since it remains optional, users who want extra protection will need to turn it on themselves once it becomes available on their device.

The feature is still in testing, so its final rollout timeline may vary by region and platform. If WhatsApp keeps the same design for public release, Scam Alert could become a useful extra layer against fraud while preserving user control over reporting and privacy.
