WhatsApp Could Soon Warn Users About Scam Messages Without Reading Their Chats

WhatsApp may soon introduce a new tool designed to help users identify suspicious messages from unknown contacts before they engage with them.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the messaging platform is developing a feature called Scam Alert that can detect potentially fraudulent messages while keeping conversations private and end-to-end encrypted.

The feature is currently under development and hasn't been released to beta testers yet. However, early details suggest WhatsApp is taking a different approach from traditional scam detection systems.

WhatsApp Wants to Keep Scam Detection Private

Most scam detection tools rely on cloud-based systems that analyze messages remotely. WhatsApp appears to be going in another direction.

As per WABetaInfo, Scam Alert is being designed to work entirely on the user's device. That means message content wouldn't need to be sent to WhatsApp, Meta, or external servers for analysis.

This approach would allow WhatsApp to add an extra layer of protection without affecting the platform's existing end-to-end encryption model.

Privacy has long been one of WhatsApp's biggest selling points, so any new safety feature needs to work within those limitations.

Users Will Still Have the Final Say

The upcoming feature isn't expected to automatically block conversations or restrict accounts.

Instead, WhatsApp may display a warning when it detects a potentially suspicious message from an unknown sender. Users can then decide whether to block and report the contact or continue the conversation.

That distinction is important because it keeps control in the hands of users rather than relying on automated moderation decisions.

Could Help Tackle Growing Messaging Scams

The company is reportedly planning to make Scam Alert optional and disabled by default, allowing users to decide whether they want the feature enabled.

At the moment, Scam Alert remains under development and is not available through the WhatsApp beta program.
