WhatsApp Tightens Security Ahead of Username Rollout: What Users Should Know

WhatsApp's upcoming username system is being built with safety in mind as the platform prepares to introduce unique usernames alongside phone numbers. The feature is expected to let users connect without sharing their mobile numbers, while maintaining phone numbers as the primary requirement for account registration.

To address concerns around fraud and fake identities, WhatsApp is rolling out multiple safeguards before making usernames widely available.

WhatsApp Username Feature Gets Stronger Security Ahead of Release

WhatsApp to Reserve High-Profile Usernames

One of the biggest protections is the reservation of usernames linked to public figures, celebrities, government agencies, and verified Meta accounts. The platform will also block closely resembling variations of well-known names to make impersonation more difficult.

Key anti-impersonation measures include:

  • Reserving usernames for public figures and government organisations.
  • Protecting verified Meta account names.
  • Restricting lookalike usernames designed to deceive users.
  • Preventing scammers from claiming high-profile usernames before launch.

These measures come amid reports that Indian authorities are reviewing the username feature over concerns related to impersonation and online fraud. Although username-based messaging has not yet been introduced, WhatsApp appears to be prioritising safety before the broader rollout.

WhatsApp Plans Strong Spam Protection

WhatsApp is also limiting how users can be discovered through usernames. Unlike social media platforms, usernames will not be publicly searchable. Users will need to know the exact username to start a conversation, reducing the chances of mass spam or random messaging.

  • The platform is also introducing several backend protections, including:
  • Limits on how many new users an account can contact within a specific period.
  • Detection of repeated username-guessing attempts.
  • Automated systems to identify scam, spam, and impersonation-related activity.

These safeguards are expected to be particularly valuable in India, one of WhatsApp's largest markets.

New Chats Will Display Safety Signals

WhatsApp also plans to provide additional context when someone starts a conversation using a username. Instead of only showing the username, the app may display helpful indicators such as:

  • Whether the account is newly created.
  • Whether the sender is already in the recipient's contacts.
  • Whether both users share mutual groups.
  • Whether the message originates from another country.

These signals are intended to help users quickly assess whether a message appears trustworthy before responding.

Phone Numbers Will Continue to Be Required

While usernames will offer a more private way to connect, they will not replace phone numbers. Mobile numbers will remain mandatory for account creation and verification, with usernames acting as an optional identity layer.

The success of the feature will ultimately depend on how well WhatsApp balances privacy with security. With reserved usernames, limited discoverability, anti-spam protections, and contextual safety indicators, the company is laying the foundation for a safer username experience before the feature reaches users worldwide.
