WhatsApp Users Are Getting New Protection Against Hackers and Scammers

WhatsApp has introduced new security features designed to protect users from account takeovers, spam calls and other digital threats. The latest update brings cross-platform passkeys, stronger two-step verification and additional caller information for unknown numbers.

These changes are aimed at making WhatsApp accounts more secure while giving users better tools to identify suspicious messages and calls.

WhatsApp Adds Cross-Platform Passkeys

WhatsApp is expanding support for passkeys, allowing users to link multiple passkeys to a single account across platforms.

Passkeys provide an alternative to traditional SMS verification codes and can use a device's fingerprint, face scan or screen lock for authentication. Users can set them up by going to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Passkeys.

The feature is particularly useful for people who use WhatsApp across Android and iOS devices, providing a simpler way to securely access their accounts.

Stronger Two-Step Verification

WhatsApp is also upgrading its two-step verification system. Users will now be able to create alphanumeric passwords with special characters instead of relying solely on a six-digit numerical PIN.

A stronger password can provide an additional layer of protection against attempts to gain unauthorised access to an account. WhatsApp recommends enabling two-step verification to further secure personal chats and account information.

WhatsApp Adds Caller Context on Android

Android users are also getting a new feature designed to help identify spam and suspicious calls from unknown numbers.

When an unsaved contact calls, WhatsApp can display additional information on the incoming call screen. This includes the caller's country code and any mutual groups shared with the user.

The additional context can help users decide whether an unknown call is legitimate or should be ignored or blocked. It could also prove useful in identifying potential scam attempts before users engage with an unknown caller.

The new security features work alongside WhatsApp's existing end-to-end encryption. Together, the updates are designed to strengthen account protection while giving users more control over unknown calls and account authentication.
