WhatsApp Will Soon Let You Hide Your Phone Number Using a Username—Here’s How It’ll Work

WhatsApp is developing a long-requested feature that could change the way users connect on the platform. Soon, you'll be able to chat with others using a username instead of your phone number, marking a significant shift in WhatsApp's identity system.

The update was first reported by WABetaInfo, a trusted source for WhatsApp feature tracking. According to a recent post, strings related to the username feature were discovered in the TestFlight beta build of WhatsApp for iOS.

WhatsApp Will Soon Let You Hide Your Phone Number Using a Username

Although it's still under development and hasn't rolled out even to beta testers yet, the presence of these backend strings signals that WhatsApp is actively building out the interface, rules, and rollout plans.

WhatsApp Usernames: What Are They and Why Now?

WhatsApp has historically linked communication to verified phone numbers. This approach, while effective for contacts already in your address book, has always raised privacy concerns in situations like group chats, business interactions, or when connecting with strangers.

With usernames, WhatsApp will allow users to create a unique handle, similar to how it works on Telegram, Signal, and other modern messaging platforms. Once live, people who don't already have your number will only see your username. This helps protect your phone number while maintaining full functionality for chats and group interactions.

The move aligns WhatsApp more closely with privacy-centric messaging services, and could also make it more accessible in professional or public use cases where users might not want to share personal numbers.

How the Username System Will Work

As detailed by WABetaInfo and confirmed by code strings in the beta version, WhatsApp is putting clear rules in place to keep usernames secure and predictable:

  • Usernames must include at least one alphabetical letter
  • Allowed characters include lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods, and underscores
  • Usernames cannot begin with "www." or include domain-like formats such as .com
  • They must be between 3 and 30 characters long
  • Usernames cannot start or end with a period, nor contain consecutive periods
  • Duplicate usernames or ones already saved in your contact list will not be allowed

Once you successfully pick a handle, WhatsApp will confirm your selection with a confetti animation. From then on, your username will appear in places where your phone number would normally be visible, including group chats and new one-on-one conversations.

Username Updates Will Be Public

In keeping with WhatsApp's transparency practices, the app will notify others in your ongoing chats when you change your username. A system-generated message will appear in the chat window, much like it currently does when users update their phone number or profile photo.

This notification system helps reduce confusion during conversations and ensures that contacts are always aware of who they are interacting with.

Coming to WhatsApp Web Too

While the mobile app is getting the core feature, WhatsApp Web will also be updated to support it. One of the upcoming additions includes a tool to check username availability, which will help users choose a handle that hasn't already been claimed.

When Will It Launch?

As of now, there's no confirmed release date for the username feature. However, given the feature's presence in the latest beta builds and the interface groundwork being laid out, it's reasonable to expect a rollout in the near future.

WhatsApp has had a busy development cycle lately, including its long-awaited iPad app, and this username feature could be one of its more significant privacy updates in recent years.
