YouTube Tightens Rules On VPN Use For Discounted Premium Subscriptions

YouTube is tightening its grip on users who leverage virtual private networks (VPNs) to acquire discounted YouTube Premium subscriptions. Several users have reported on Reddit that their Premium plans were cancelled after using a VPN to subscribe at a lower price offered in a different country.

Understanding VPNs and Regional Pricing

VPNs are a common online security tool that shields a user's IP address, which can pinpoint their geographic location. While VPNs aid in protecting user privacy and fending off cyberattacks, they can also be configured to display a specific country of origin.

YouTube Targets VPN Use For Cheaper Premium Subscriptions

This feature has been misused by some users who employ VPNs to appear as if they're located in countries with cheaper YouTube Premium plans. For instance, in Ukraine, a YouTube Premium subscription costs roughly $2.40 per month, significantly lower compared to the US price of around $14.

YouTube's Crackdown and User Response

YouTube confirmed to TechCrunch that they can identify users who misrepresent their signup country. According to a spokesperson, the system will prompt these users to update their billing information to reflect their actual location. This ensures YouTube can offer the most relevant plans and deals based on the user's region.

While YouTube has remained silent on cancellations specifically, a Google support representative revealed to PCMag that accounts identified with falsified signup country information have indeed had their memberships cancelled. Emails and in-app notifications are sent to these users informing them of the cancellation.

This crackdown comes a year after YouTube raised subscription prices for US users, pushing the individual plan from $12 to $14 per month.

Uncertainties and Potential Impact

The extent of YouTube's recent cancellations remains unclear. However, this move signifies a stricter approach towards users who exploit VPNs for cheaper subscriptions. This raises questions for those who use VPNs legitimately for privacy concerns while residing in countries with higher YouTube Premium prices.

It will be interesting to see if YouTube clarifies its stance on VPN usage and how it plans to address the concerns of legitimate VPN users who are impacted by this crackdown.
