YouTube Implements Stricter Verification For Premium Family Plans To Prevent Sharing Among Non-Household Users

YouTube is taking steps to curb the sharing of YouTube Premium Family subscriptions among users who do not reside in the same household as the plan manager. Reports indicate that users are receiving warning emails, stating their access to YouTube Premium will be paused if they fail to pass location-based verification. This approach mirrors similar measures previously adopted by other streaming services.

Netflix, for example, has reminded users who share accounts outside a single household to establish their own subscriptions. The platform continues to permit account use during travel and verifies household devices through IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity. YouTube's recent actions suggest a similar strategy aimed at enforcing its existing policy more strictly.

YouTube's New Verification Measures

According to Android Police, YouTube has started identifying YouTube Premium Family accounts where members do not live with the plan manager. The Premium Family plan allows up to five individuals to enjoy ad-free access to both YouTube and YouTube Music. Although the policy has always required members to reside under one roof, enforcement was previously lax.

However, this seems to be changing now. Some users have reportedly received emails titled "Your YouTube Premium family membership will be paused." These notices warn that if a user is detected at a different physical address than the plan manager within 14 days, their Premium access will be revoked.

Impact on Users

While flagged members will remain part of the family group, they will only be able to watch YouTube with ads unless they verify their eligibility by contacting Google support. To ensure compliance, YouTube conducts an electronic check-in every 30 days to confirm if Premium Family plan members share the same address.

In the past, this requirement was not strictly enforced, allowing members living elsewhere to retain their benefits. However, this crackdown may result in users residing in separate households losing their Premium access.

YouTube's Strategic Move

This enforcement likely aims to encourage users towards individual subscriptions or its two-member Premium plans introduced in May. After Netflix saw an increase in subscribers by restricting password sharing, it appears that YouTube is seeking a similar outcome.

YouTubers have also raised concerns about AI editing their Shorts without consent. In response, YouTube stated it is "running an experiment." Meanwhile, YouTube Music is celebrating its decade-long presence in music streaming by introducing several new features. The platform recently launched comments on albums and Taste Match playlists as part of its 10th-anniversary celebrations. Additionally, it is testing a Daily Discover feature offering personalised music recommendations.

YouTube's AI age estimation model is set to roll out next week and will impose restrictions on minor accounts. This development aligns with broader efforts by tech companies to enhance user experience while ensuring compliance with policies.
