YouTube is Quietly Testing a New Play Button for Playing Random Shorts Content

YouTube, the ubiquitous video streaming platform, is continually evolving and experimenting with new features to enhance user experience. While its recent efforts to combat ad-blocker usage have garnered attention, the platform has also quietly introduced an intriguing feature - a Play button that appears at the bottom right of the screen.

This unannounced addition opens up random Shorts content, providing users with a fresh way to discover videos.

The Unnoticed Play Button

Zachary Kew-Denniss, a member of Android Police, discovered this unpublicized feature. He noticed a Play button on the YouTube Android app.

When users press the Play button, they are presented with random Shorts content that is tailored to their interests.

An Enhanced Accessibility

While YouTube had previously experimented with a dedicated banner in the center of the screen to offer a similar experience, the Play button's placement at the bottom of the screen makes it notably more accessible. It aims to provide a convenient way for users to explore new content when they find themselves without a specific video in mind.

Content Selection and Testing

Although YouTube has not officially confirmed the existence of this feature, it is reasonable to assume that the content selection for the Play button is based on a user's watch history, subscribed creators/channels, and video likes, among other factors. Given its limited visibility and the absence of an official announcement, it appears that YouTube is testing this feature on a restricted scale.

Not Part of the Official Experiment

This discreet feature does not seem to be part of YouTube's official experiment program. The platform typically conducts experiments to offer early access to forthcoming features. While these experiments were initially exclusive to Premium tier subscribers, YouTube recently expanded access to these trials for a wider user base.
