YouTube plans on developing an education-centric app in India: Report
YouTube has seen a ‘huge growth' when it comes to education and DIY sector in India. The reason behind this is the low data tariffs.
Google's video service platform YouTube is reportedly working on developing an education-centric app for the Indian masses. It is being reported that the company is planning on investing in the education sector in India with the launch of an education app.
Apart from the education app, YouTube has also planned to roll out the 'sponsor' tab for a wide range of Indian video creators and further expand a feature which is similar to the Snapchat 'Stories' to all of its user base.
According to some sources from the internet, the company's plans were first revealed by Gautam Anand, MD YouTube Asia Pacific, at a private event in Singapore earlier this month. The report further suggests that other sources have revealed that 'YouTube' has seen a 'huge growth' when it comes to education and DIY sector in India. The reason behind this is the low data tariffs. The majority of the growth is seen primarily in the Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities along with smaller towns, whose users watch the videos to brush up their skills. In regard to this, YouTube is working on sponsoring a 'select few content creators' to help them create more of such relevant content.
The company might launch a standalone app for the education sector, with one of the sources claiming that:
"Learning is a category where serious people come to learn something; they are seeing a lot of drop off because of ads or unrelated content which is why they are thinking of launching a separate app".
At this point, Google is also focusing on India as one of the key growth markets for education and learning. Following this, the tech giant had also arranged a workshop for Machine Learning for the developers and engineers in Bangalore earlier this year. It is also being speculated that the dedicated education app like Byju's, which is available for download at the PlayStore.
We also came across some reports that state that Reliance Jio has made an investment in Embibe which is an AI-based learning service that comes in the same line as the Byju's. If the reports are correct then Reliance Jio could make such content available for its user through an app.
