Youtube Shorts Are Getting Longer—From 60 Seconds to 3 Minutes

YouTube has announced an update to YouTube Shorts, making it easier and more fun for creators. YouTube has confirmed it is extending the ability to create longer vertical videos. This has come after many creators asked YouTube to allow them to explore its full potential.

YouTube Shorts, the Instagram 'Reels' alternative was launched back in 2020, where users could only record up to 60 seconds of video. Now, it will allow creators to record up to 3 minutes of video starting October 15.

In a blog post, the company said, ''This was a top requested feature by creators, so we're excited to give you more flexibility to tell your story ''. It further stated that the change applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio and won't affect any videos uploaded before October 15. The company also promised that it'll be working to improve recommendations for longer Shorts in the coming months.

Other Updates to YouTube Shorts

In addition, YouTube has updated the Shorts player with a streamlined look, allowing creators' content to take center stage and viewers to focus on the content they love.

Users can easily recreate the shorts with templates, which allows them to add new audio. One can try templates by tapping "Remix" on a Short that they like and select "Use this template".

In the coming months, users will be able to tap into the vast universe of YouTube content right from their Shorts camera. It will make it easier to remix clips from their favorite videos, music videos, and more. It will also allow you to pull content from multiple clips across YouTube, the company added.

Moreover, Google DeepMind's video-generating model, Veo, is coming to YouTube Shorts. Creators will be able to bring their ideas to life with even more extraordinary video backgrounds and standalone video clips.

It will also allow creators to customize Shorts with an option named "Show fewer Shorts". Users can choose this setting by clicking on the three-dot menu in the upper right of any Shorts grid in the Home feed. With this, you'll get fewer Shorts in the Home feed.
