YouTube Shorts New Features Explained: Clear Screen Mode, 2x Playback, Timer, Dislike Button Removed

YouTube is rolling out a fresh update for Shorts, introducing several interface changes designed to make the short-video experience cleaner and easier to control. The update brings a distraction-free viewing mode, faster playback, a simpler mute option, and a new timer to help users limit endless scrolling.

At the same time, YouTube is removing the dislike button from the Shorts player-a move that could divide opinion among regular users. The rollout is happening gradually, so the new features may not be available to everyone immediately.

YouTube Shorts New Features Explained

Clear Screen Mode Offers a Better Viewing Experience

One of the biggest additions is Clear Screen mode, which removes on-screen buttons and overlays while watching Shorts. This allows videos to occupy the full display, making it easier to view content without interface elements getting in the way.

The feature should especially benefit videos with text overlays, recipes, tutorials, product showcases, and travel clips where every part of the frame matters.

2x Playback Speed Comes to Shorts

YouTube is also adding 2x playback speed for Shorts. Users can activate the feature by pulling down on the screen while watching a video.

Although playback controls have long been available for regular YouTube videos, they become more useful now that Shorts can be up to three minutes long. Faster playback can help users quickly watch explainers, interviews, podcasts, and reaction videos.

Easier Audio Controls

The update also simplifies muting Shorts. Users can now pause a video and tap the mute icon to disable audio.

While it's a relatively small change, it makes watching Shorts more convenient in public places, offices, classrooms, or late at night without unexpected audio playing.

New Shorts Timer Helps Reduce Endless Scrolling

YouTube is introducing a built-in Shorts timer that lets users decide how long they want to spend watching short videos. According to reports, the timer can even be set to zero, effectively blocking access to the Shorts feed.

YouTube Shorts New Features Explained

The feature arrives as platforms face increasing pressure to offer healthier digital habits. While it won't completely eliminate addictive scrolling, it gives users a built-in tool to better manage their screen time.

Dislike Button Removed From Shorts

Perhaps the most controversial change is the removal of the dislike button from the Shorts interface. The traditional thumbs-up icon has also been replaced with a heart, while the visible control stack has been reduced from five buttons to four.

YouTube says a dislike can represent different things-it could mean poor video quality, an irrelevant topic, or simply content that doesn't match a viewer's interests. Instead, the company wants users to rely on options like Not Interested, Don't Recommend This Channel, and Report, which provide more specific feedback.

However, removing the dislike button also eliminates one of the quickest ways for users to react to spam, repetitive, or low-quality content without opening another menu.

The move follows YouTube's 2021 decision to hide public dislike counts across the platform. While the dislike button remains available on standard YouTube videos, Shorts is now moving closer to other short-video platforms that primarily focus on likes, comments, and sharing.
