YouTube Upgrades AI-Generated Content Labels Across Shorts and Videos
YouTube is changing how YouTube AI disclosure labels work so viewers can recognise AI content faster. The platform is moving labels to more visible spots and adding automatic detection for some AI-generated videos. YouTube says these steps aim to give clearer information while keeping creators responsible for declaring realistic AI use.
The updated placement of YouTube AI disclosure labels for regular videos and Shorts is starting to appear for users now. YouTube also plans to introduce automatic detection and auto-labelling tools for photorealistic AI-generated content, with that phased rollout scheduled to begin in May 2026.

YouTube AI Disclosure Labels for Long Videos and Shorts
For longer videos, YouTube AI disclosure labels will sit directly below the video player, positioned above the description. On Shorts, the disclosure will show as an on-screen overlay during playback. YouTube says this format will become the standard way of marking realistic AI-generated or strongly AI-altered material across the platform.
Not every video using AI will receive the same treatment. YouTube explains that unrealistic clips, animated sequences, or material that is only lightly edited with AI will continue to display AI information within the expanded description area. These videos will not get the prominent placement reserved for more realistic or significantly altered AI content.
Automatic Detection Supporting YouTube AI Disclosure Labels
YouTube is introducing internal systems designed to spot videos that contain notable amounts of photorealistic AI-generated footage. Creators still need to declare realistic AI usage themselves. However, when these systems detect major AI elements and a creator has not added a label, YouTube will apply a YouTube AI disclosure label automatically.
YouTube states that creators will control the disclosure setting in most everyday cases. If a creator thinks a video has been wrongly tagged as AI-generated, the status can be changed manually in YouTube Studio. Some labels will stay locked, though, especially where YouTube AI tools or specific metadata are involved.
| Reason for permanent YouTube AI disclosure labels | Details |
|---|---|
| Use of YouTube AI tools | Videos created with tools such as Veo or Dream Screen |
| C2PA metadata | Files containing C2PA information showing the video was fully AI-generated |
Monetisation and Recommendations Under YouTube AI Disclosure Labels
YouTube clarifies that adding YouTube AI disclosure labels will not, by itself, change whether a video is recommended or earns ad revenue. The company says the policy is meant to balance transparency with creator choice while giving viewers clearer context about how much AI shaped what they are watching.
With label placements already shifting and automatic checks due from May 2026, YouTube is tightening rules around how AI involvement is declared. The platform expects creators to keep disclosing realistic AI use, while viewers gain clearer signals about photorealistic or heavily modified clips compared with lighter or purely stylistic AI edits.
