Zomato, Blinkit, Swiggy Smash New Year's Eve Order Records
The arrival of the New Year is always a time of celebration, and in India, the festivities have taken a digital turn with a massive spike in food and grocery deliveries. As families and friends gather to ring in the New Year, food and grocery delivery apps such as Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit have become the unsung heroes of the celebrations. These platforms have experienced record-breaking orders, showcasing a shift in consumer behavior and the growing reliance on digital services for festive occasions.
Zomato and Swiggy Break Records
Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, announced on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the platform reached an all-time high in daily deliveries. The app's performance during the New Year celebrations was phenomenal, with Zomato delivering over 140 orders every second. This marked a significant milestone, surpassing the total number of orders from several previous New Year's Eves combined. Swiggy wasn't far behind, with over 1 million users active on the app every hour and delivering more orders per minute than any other day in its history, as stated by Swiggy's CEO Rohit Kapoor.

Changing Consumer Habits and Generosity
The staggering number of orders also highlights the changing habits of Indian consumers. More and more people are opting to use delivery services for their festive celebrations, indicating a shift towards convenience and efficiency. Zomato saw Biryani as one of the most ordered items, which reflects the country's culinary preferences even during celebrations. In addition to the increase in orders, there was a notable outpouring of generosity, with Zomato users tipping delivery partners over Rs 98 lakhs in just one day, a gesture that CEO Deepinder Goyal gratefully acknowledged.
Fee Controversy Amidst Celebrations
However, the celebrations were not without their controversies. A Twitter user pointed out that Zomato charged a higher platform fee than usual during the New Year celebrations. Despite being a Zomato Gold Member, the user was charged Rs 9 as Platform Fees for an order worth Rs 279, which was higher than the standard fee. This led to discussions about pricing policies and transparency during peak demand times.
Grocery Deliveries Hit a High Note
While Zomato and Swiggy were busy with food deliveries, their grocery delivery services also saw a remarkable surge. Blinkit, owned by Zomato and led by CEO Albinder Dhindsa, reported setting multiple records across various categories. The platform experienced its highest order volume, with significant sales of soft drinks and chips. Blinkit sold over 1.4 lakh packets of chips and 68K bottles of soda, with potato chips being the top item, all before 6 PM on New Year's Eve.
As these platforms continue to cater to the demands of festive seasons and special events, they not only reflect the success of their business models but also the changing dynamics of Indian society's consumption patterns. Zomato and Swiggy, with their efficient handling of order surges during major events like IPL and Cricket World Cup Finals, have proven to be indispensable to the Indian festive experience.
