Nothing’s Essential Apps Builder Beta Is Live: Check Eligible Devices and How to Make Apps

Nothing has moved its Essential Apps platform into beta, expanding access to a feature that lets users create small, personal apps using simple language. Instead of downloading apps designed for everyone, the idea here is to build tools that fit how you actually use your phone.

The concept was first tested through a limited alpha release inside Playground last September. With beta now live, Nothing is opening the system to a wider audience ahead of a public release later this year.

What Beta Access Means

Beta access is rolling out gradually through a waitlist, with users added in batches. Nothing says this phase is about understanding real-world usage, collecting feedback, and improving reliability before Essential Apps become widely available.

If you’re part of the beta, you’re essentially helping shape how this system evolves. Some things will feel polished, others may feel incomplete, and that’s expected at this stage.

Essential Apps: Build And Design

Essential Apps are created inside Playground, Nothing’s web-based hub for building and sharing tools. You don’t start with templates or code. Instead, you describe what you want the app to do in plain language, whether that’s tracking meetings, showing reminders, or creating a simple widget for something you check often.

The Apps Builder handles updates differently from traditional apps. When you make changes, only the parts you edit are updated. The rest of the app stays intact, which helps keep things stable as you tweak and refine it over time.

How To Make An Essential App

Creating an Essential App is meant to feel lightweight. You head to Playground, describe your idea in simple terms, and let the AI-powered builder generate the app. Once it’s created, you can adjust specific details without rebuilding everything from scratch.

If an update doesn’t work the way you expect, you can restore a previous version with a single tap. When you’re happy with how it looks and works, one tap deploys the app directly to your phone, where it appears instantly on your home screen.

Essential Apps: Eligible Phones

Early beta access is currently limited to the Nothing Phone (3). Nothing says this is because the phone has the performance headroom needed to run multiple Essential Apps at once, while the system is still being refined.

As the beta matures, Essential Apps are expected to expand to other Nothing and CMF devices running Nothing OS 4.0 or newer.

What You Can Build Right Now

At the moment, Essential Apps support three permissions: location, read-only calendar access, and contacts. That allows users to create practical tools like location-based reminders, agenda views, meeting countdowns, and quick contact widgets.

More capabilities are planned for future beta updates, including camera and microphone access, notifications, calling, Bluetooth, and network features. A late February OS update is also expected to unlock activity recognition, usage data, sensor access, and Nothing’s first system-level Weather API.
