After Murmurs Around ChatGPT 5.2, Elon Musk Confirms Grok 4.20’s Launch Timeline
Elon Musk has shared a small but interesting update about the next version of Grok, and it sounds like xAI isn’t slowing down at all. According to him, the new model, called Grok 4.20, is only a few weeks away.

It’s a quick follow-up to Grok 4.1, which came out in November, making this one of the fastest update cycles the company has pushed so far.
Musk Drops the Timeline
Musk posted on X that Grok 4.20 will arrive “in 3 or 4 weeks.” Since we’re already into the second week of December, that puts the update somewhere between the end of the month and early January.
The timing feels tight, but xAI has been rolling out upgrades rapidly, so another quick turnaround isn’t surprising.
A Stealth Appearance Before the Announcement
Before Musk said anything, a few X users spotted something unusual on Alpha Arena, a platform that tests AI models by dropping them into a stock trading simulation. Each model gets a virtual $10,000 and two weeks to make investment decisions using real stock prices. It’s basically a stress test for reasoning.
A mysterious new model started climbing the leaderboard, and people soon guessed it was Grok 4.20 being tested quietly. The results looked strong. In the current “season 1.5” run, the model finished with a 12 percent profit, while GPT-5.1 and Gemini 3 Pro ended up in the negative.
It’s not a complete measure of intelligence, but it does show how the model behaves in a real-world scenario where timing and decision making matter.
What We Know So Far
Apart from the Alpha Arena performance, there isn’t much public information. The early clues point to better reasoning and faster handling of real-world data. Grok 4.1 was already a noticeable jump, so 4.20 might continue that trend, especially in tasks that need quick analysis.
But since xAI hasn’t shared technical details yet, we’re mostly piecing things together from hints. The company will likely talk more once the release date gets closer.
Grok 4.1 Is Still Getting Attention
While everyone is now looking ahead to 4.20, Grok 4.1 continues to be used heavily. A slimmer version called Grok 4.1 Fast recently hit a record on OpenRouter after processing 1.16 trillion tokens in a week. It even passed Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4.5 Opus and Gemini 3 Pro during that period.
It’s worth pointing out that OpenRouter is a third-party credit platform, so the numbers don’t automatically equal popularity. High usage can mean many things. Still, it’s a sign that developers and users are experimenting with the Grok lineup.
What’s Next
If Musk sticks to the timeline, Grok 4.20 could arrive right around the new year. Whether it solves some of the issues seen in 4.1, like sycophancy and inconsistent reasoning, is something we’ll only know once people start using it directly.
For now, the Alpha Arena appearance gives the strongest hint that xAI has been working on a more capable version behind the scenes.
