Sony’s RX1R III Returns Nearly a Decade Later With 61MP Full-Frame Power and AI Autofocus

After nearly a decade, Sony has finally refreshed its premium compact full-frame line with the official launch of the RX1R III — a camera that seems tailor-made for serious shooters who want professional-grade performance without lugging around a full rig. First introduced in 2012 and updated in 2015 with the RX1R II, the RX1 series gained a cult following for cramming a full-frame sensor and ZEISS optics into a pocketable frame.

Now, in 2025, the RX1R III reimagines that legacy with a 61-megapixel sensor, AI-driven autofocus, and a tighter integration with Sony’s evolving imaging ecosystem.

A Decade Later: What’s Actually New?

The RX1R III is not just a spec bump — it's a substantial rethink of what a compact full-frame shooter can be in the AI era. The most prominent upgrade is the 61MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, paired with Sony’s current-gen BIONZ XR processor, both borrowed from the Alpha 7R V.

That’s the same sensor used in a $3,500+ mirrorless body, now packed into a form factor that’s barely larger than a paperback novel. Crucially, the sensor omits a low-pass filter and adds anti-reflective coatings, promising exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness and better dynamic range.

Paired with that sensor is a fixed ZEISS 35mm f/2 Sonnar T* lens — the same as in the RX1R II — but this time optimized to work at the micron level with the higher-res sensor.

Autofocus, Now Smarter Than Before

Perhaps the most glaring weakness of the RX1R II was its sluggish and unreliable autofocus. The RX1R III addresses that head-on with AI-powered subject detection. Sony has pulled from its Alpha series here, using a dedicated AI chip to detect and track human and animal eyes, heads, and bodies — and even non-human subjects like cars and planes.

Real-world reliability will need testing, but the presence of Alpha-grade AF in such a compact body is promising.

Step Crop Shooting

While the lens is fixed at 35mm, the RX1R III introduces Step Crop Shooting, a digital zoom option that lets you toggle between effective focal lengths of 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm. These aren't just dumb crops — they’re intelligently processed, and if you shoot RAW, you can fine-tune the crop in post.

Also notable: a macro ring lets you focus as close as 20 cm with up to 0.26x magnification. That adds surprising versatility to what could’ve been a one-trick lens.

Creative Looks and Video-Readiness

Sony has baked in 12 Creative Looks that can be applied to stills and video. While full video specs haven’t been detailed yet, the inclusion of profiles like FL2 and FL3 (which mimic subdued film tones or vivid color palettes) indicates Sony’s interest in hybrid creators — users who shoot stills and short-form video on the same device.

It’s still unclear whether the RX1R III will support 4K 60p or advanced codecs, but for quick video captures with cinematic vibes, the tools are here.

Design: Same DNA, More Refined

At a glance, the RX1R III keeps the classic silhouette but introduces several usability upgrades. The magnesium alloy body features a sleeker top plate with recessed dials and a refined grip for better handheld stability. There’s also a 2.36M-dot OLED EVF offering 0.70x magnification — essential for bright daylight shooting.

Battery life is quoted at up to 300 shots (270 with EVF use), powered by the tried-and-tested NP-FW50 battery. A USB-C port with PD fast charging and external power support ensures you won’t be left stranded mid-shoot.

A Nod to Sustainability and Accessibility

Sony is building the RX1R III in facilities powered entirely by renewable energy. The packaging uses Sony’s Original Blended Material — a mix of bamboo, sugarcane, and recycled paper. More importantly, the camera now includes screen reader support and menu magnification features, making it slightly more accessible for visually impaired photographers.

Accessories: Premium Pricing for Premium Add-Ons

Sony is rolling out a new line of dedicated accessories for the RX1R III:

  • TG-2 Thumb Grip – $299.99
  • LCS-RXL Leather Body Case – $249.99
  • LHP-1 Metal Lens Hood – $199.99

Each accessory continues the RX1R series’ legacy of blending form and function. Whether these are must-haves or luxury add-ons will depend on the buyer.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony RX1R III is priced at $5,099.99 USD, with availability starting July 2025. The official accessories will begin shipping in August 2025. It's not aimed at the average enthusiast — but then again, neither were its predecessors.
