Microsoft Surface Event: Key Announcements on Copilot Plus PCs, Snapdragon X Chips, New AI Features, & More
At its latest event ahead of Build 2024, Microsoft introduced a new era of PCs under the Copilot Plus brand. This fresh lineup integrates advanced AI capabilities, marking a significant step forward in personal computing. Here's a breakdown of the key announcements.
Introducing Copilot Plus PCs
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the Copilot Plus PCs, emphasizing their AI-driven performance. These devices feature the new Arm-based Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors from Qualcomm, with future models set to include Intel and AMD chips. The neural processing units (NPUs) in these processors are tailored to support the enhanced AI features in Windows 11. Microsoft claims these PCs are 58% faster than the latest M3 MacBook Air, which is a bold claim.

But that's not all - Intel and AMD are also developing Copilot Plus-compatible chips, offering users even more choices in the future.
Surface Pro: Faster and with an OLED Option The new Surface Pro, now equipped with Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, boasts a performance increase of up to 90% over the previous generation. For the first time, it also offers an OLED display option. Starting at $999.99, the 13-inch Surface Pro is available in blue, beige, black, and platinum and supports the new Surface Pro Flex Keyboard.
Surface Laptop: Improved Design and Performance The new Surface Laptop features the same AI-ready Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, along with a refreshed design that includes thinner bezels and a haptic touchpad. It promises up to 22 hours of local video playback and an 80% speed improvement over its predecessor. Available in 13.8- and 15-inch display options, the Surface Laptop 6 starts at $999.99 and comes in multiple colors.
Recall: An New AI Feature
One standout feature of the Copilot Plus PCs is Recall, an AI tool that logs all user activities locally. This functionality allows users to search and retrieve any content they've interacted with, from chats in Discord to specific slides in PowerPoint. It's designed to make finding past interactions more intuitive and efficient.
Expanding Copilot in Windows 11
Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant takes center stage in Copilot Plus PCs. This AI companion is no longer relegated to specific tasks. It becomes a deeply integrated part of your Windows 11 experience. Imagine receiving intelligent suggestions within the Settings menu, getting help with file editing in File Explorer, or even composing replies to notifications - all with the help of Copilot.
But wait, there's more! Copilot Plus PCs leverage OpenAI's advanced GPT-4o model, allowing the AI to answer questions directly related to what's on your screen. Need clarification on a graph in a research paper? Copilot might have the answer right there.
Partnerships with Adobe and Other Software Developers
Microsoft isn't going it alone. Major software developers like Adobe are joining the party, optimizing their applications specifically for Copilot Plus PCs. This means popular tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro will be available in native Arm64 versions, ensuring smoother performance and better integration with the AI features of Copilot Plus. This collaboration extends beyond Adobe, with companies like DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, and others also expected to offer AI-powered features on Copilot Plus machines.
Availability
The first Copilot Plus PCs, including the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, will be available starting June 18. Other major manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, Acer, Asus, and HP are also preparing to launch their own Copilot Plus devices.
