Gaming Hardware Is Getting Shockingly Expensive in India: Here’s What's Going On

If you have been planning to buy a gaming laptop or build a gaming PC in India, there is one piece of advice becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: the best time to buy gaming hardware may have been yesterday.

Prices across gaming laptops, graphics cards, RAM and SSDs are rising, making PC gaming more expensive than it was just a few months ago. With AI infrastructure increasing demand for memory and storage, there is little indication that prices will return to their previous levels anytime soon.

Gaming Laptops Are Getting More Expensive

The change is particularly noticeable in gaming laptops. Not long ago, machines with older-generation hardware could be found for under Rs. 60,000. Today, similar entry-level gaming laptops are increasingly starting at Rs. 75,000 or more.

Moving up the price ladder does not necessarily bring better value. Gaming laptops without the latest Nvidia RTX 50-series GPUs now start at just above Rs. 1 lakh, while models featuring the RTX 5050 can reach around Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Even the previous-generation RTX 4050 has not become significantly cheaper. These laptops are still commonly priced between Rs. 90,000 and Rs. 1 lakh.

That makes the traditional strategy of waiting for older hardware to become cheaper increasingly unreliable.

Rs. 2 Lakh Gaming Laptops Still Come With 16GB RAM

The situation becomes more frustrating at the premium end.

Gaming laptops priced around Rs. 2 lakh are still being sold with 16GB of DDR5 RAM in some configurations. At this price, 32GB should arguably be the baseline, particularly for users who also game, stream, edit videos or run demanding applications.

Instead, buyers may have to spend more on an immediate memory upgrade.

And RAM itself has become considerably more expensive.

DDR5 RAM Prices Are Inflating PC Build Costs

A 16GB DDR5 RAM stick from budget brands such as EVM can now start at around Rs. 20,000. Better-known brands such as Corsair, ADATA and G.Skill can start at around Rs. 26,000. Less than five months ago, Corsair's entry-level 16GB DDR5 RAM kit was priced at around Rs. 19,000-already more than double its original launch price.

This has a major impact on PC-building budgets. A 32GB DDR5 kit that was once a relatively straightforward purchase can now consume a substantial portion of the money that could otherwise go toward a faster GPU.

The bigger concern is the supply outlook. Memory manufacturers are allocating significant production capacity toward AI and server workloads, increasing pressure on consumer DRAM availability.

SSDs Are Also Getting Costlier

Storage has not escaped the price increases. A 1TB Gen 4 SSD now starts at around Rs. 15,000, while Gen 5 SSDs start at approximately Rs. 20,000. Considering how quickly modern games can consume storage, upgrading to a larger SSD can add significantly to the cost of a gaming PC.

Growing demand for NAND from AI and data-centre infrastructure is another factor putting pressure on consumer storage prices.

Nvidia Graphics Cards Are Moving Up the Price Ladder

Graphics cards remain the most important component for gaming performance, but Nvidia GPUs are also becoming more expensive.

RTX 5050 graphics cards now start above Rs. 35,000 in India. That is notable because the same starting price could get buyers an RTX 5060 earlier this year.

Meanwhile, 8GB RTX 5060 Ti models now start at around Rs. 60,000.

AMD graphics cards have also seen price increases. A Gigabyte Radeon RX 9060 XT Gaming OC 16GB GDDR6 that I purchased four months ago for Rs. 44,000 is now priced at approximately Rs. 56,467 - an increase of more than Rs. 12,000.

AI Demand Could Keep Consumer Hardware Prices High

The common thread connecting many of these price increases is the growing demand for computing infrastructure.

AI data centres require enormous quantities of DRAM, NAND storage and other components. Manufacturers are consequently prioritising enterprise and AI-related products, which can leave less capacity for consumer hardware.

Memory manufacturers have also indicated that production capacity is being committed well into the coming years. If demand continues to outpace supply, consumers should not expect prices to fall quickly.

Don't Assume Every Sale Is a Genuine Bargain

There is another reason to be cautious about waiting for major sales.

Retailers can increase prices before promotional events and then offer discounts that bring products closer to their previous street prices. This can make a discount appear larger than it actually is.

That does not mean every sale is misleading. However, buyers should track the actual price history of a product instead of judging a deal solely by its advertised discount.

Should You Buy Your Gaming PC Now?

This does not mean gamers should panic-buy hardware. If you do not need a new PC, there is little reason to spend money simply because prices are rising.

However, if you were already planning a gaming laptop purchase or PC build, waiting indefinitely for prices to fall could work against you.

Older GPUs are staying expensive, RAM is consuming a larger share of PC budgets, and SSDs are no longer guaranteed to become cheaper with time. The days when waiting automatically meant getting more hardware for less money may be behind us.

For Indian PC gamers, the sensible approach is to identify the hardware you need, track its real street price and buy when you find a genuinely good deal.

Because in the current market, the gaming PC you want today could simply cost more tomorrow.
