Apple Dominates AI PC Market as Mac Computers Capture 60% of AI PC Shipments in Q2 2024: Report
Global shipments of artificial intelligence (AI) PCs saw a significant rise in Q2 2024, as reported by market research firm Canalys. Over 8.8 million AI-capable computers were shipped, with Apple's Mac computers making up the majority.
The adoption of these devices is expected to increase further in the latter half of 2024, driven by the launch of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chipset series.

AI PC Shipments Grew in Q2 2024
According to Canalys' latest report, Mac computers powered by Apple Silicon chipsets accounted for 60 percent of AI PC shipments in Q2 2024. This was significantly higher compared to Windows AI computers, which made up just under 40 percent of the shipments during the same period.
All current-generation Apple computers are equipped with M-series chips, unlike many Windows computers that still use some non-AI-focused processors. Most customers will be able to fully utilise the AI capabilities of their Mac hardware with the introduction of Apple Intelligence features later this year or in early 2025.
Windows AI PC Market Share
Despite Apple's dominance, Windows AI PC shipments grew sequentially by an impressive 127 percent. Among OEMs, Lenovo's Yoga Slim and ThinkPad laptops contributed to a 6 percent market share. Dell held a slightly higher share at 7 percent with its Inspiron, XPS, and Latitude models. HP led with an 8 percent market share following the release of its EliteBook and Omnibook Copilot+ PCs.

The research firm also highlighted that Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series chipsets were only launched in June. This left a limited timeframe for OEMs to ship enough units of these AI-capable computers within Q2 2024.
Future Prospects for AI PCs
These companies have committed to integrating Arm chipsets into upcoming products, promising better performance and efficiency than most x86 chips. "With a strong foundation now set, AI-capable PC shipments are poised to gain further traction in the second half of 2024," said Canalys' Principal Analyst Ishan Dutt.
The arrival of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chipset series is anticipated to boost adoption rates for AI PCs. These chipsets power recently launched Copilot+ PCs from various OEMs, enhancing their performance capabilities.
In summary, while Apple currently leads the market for AI-capable PCs, Windows-based systems are rapidly catching up. The introduction of new technologies like Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series is expected to drive further growth and innovation in this sector.
