CES 2024: AMD Unveils Ryzen 8000G Series With Ryzen AI, Expands Ryzen 5000 Series

AMD made a splash at CES 2024, introducing the Ryzen 8000G Series desktop processors, marking a notable advancement in desktop computing. These processors, built on the Zen 4 microarchitecture, not only bring enhanced processing power but also introduce AMD's Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for the first time in desktop CPUs.

Powerhouse Processors with Integrated GPUs

The Ryzen 8000G series, featuring up to eight cores and 16 threads, positions itself as an all-in-one desktop solution with integrated GPUs. AMD claims these processors deliver substantial power and performance for demanding tasks, making them suitable for a variety of applications.

AMD Unveils Ryzen 8000G Series With Ryzen AI

Key Specifications of Ryzen 8000G Series:

  • Ryzen 7 8700G: 8 cores / 16 threads, up to 5.1GHz boost / 4.2GHz base, 24MB cache, 65W TDP, Radeon 780M graphics. Price: $329.
  • Ryzen 5 8600G: 6 cores / 12 threads, up to 5.0GHz boost / 4.3GHz base, 22MB cache, 65W TDP, Radeon 760M graphics. Price: $229.
  • Ryzen 5 8500G: 6 cores / 12 threads, up to 5.0GHz boost / 3.5GHz base, 22MB cache, 65W TDP, Radeon 740M graphics. Price: $179.
  • Ryzen 3 8300G: 4 cores / 8 threads, up to 4.9GHz boost / 3.4GHz base, 12MB cache, 65W TDP, Radeon 740M graphics (OEM). Price: N/A.

Ryzen AI

A new addition to the Ryzen 8000G series is the inclusion of the Ryzen AI, an AI Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Ryzen AI, first seen in AMD's Ryzen 7040 series of mobile SoCs, is designed to offload and accelerate AI tasks, offering benefits such as background blurring, eye-gaze correction in video calls, and efficient photo and video upscaling. The combination of CPU, NPU, and integrated GPU allows for an impressive 39 TOPS of inferencing performance.

Positioning and Pricing

AMD is clear about the positioning of the Ryzen 8000G series. While capable of handling demanding tasks, these processors are not intended to replace enthusiast graphics cards. AMD suggests that demanding games may require lower settings, but the advantage lies in modern game engines looking impressive even at these settings.

Memory Bump for RX 7600 XT Graphics Card

In addition to the processors, AMD has upgraded its entry-level graphics card lineup. The RX 7600 XT now features 16GB of GDDR6 memory, offering improved performance in a variety of games. The base and boost frequencies have been increased, providing extra frames for an enhanced gaming experience.

Key Specifications of RX 7600 XT

Memory: 16GB GDDR6
Base/Boost Frequencies: Increased by 220MHz and 100MHz respectively
TDP: 190W
Price: $329

Expanding the Ryzen 5000 Series

AMD continues to support its Ryzen 5000 series, announcing four new additions to the lineup. These CPUs and APUs cater to various needs, including cost-conscious gamers and those seeking additional cache configurations.
