Microsoft Announces Windows 365 Link Compact PC For Seamless Cloud Access at Ignite 2024

Microsoft is set to introduce a new compact PC, the Windows 365 Link, in April 2025. Priced at $349, this device is tailored for the Windows 365 cloud service. It acts as a thin client PC, enabling users to connect to the cloud and stream Windows 11. The Link is designed to be fanless and user-friendly, making it an ideal companion for Microsoft's cloud services.

The Windows 365 Link device prioritises security, leveraging Microsoft's expertise in securing Windows and Xbox systems. It operates with a lightweight OS that facilitates quick and secure access to a Windows 365 cloud PC. "We want the focus of Link to be the Windows 365 part of it," states Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows and Surface at Microsoft.

Windows 365 Cloud Service

Businesses can benefit from the Windows 365 service by transitioning employees to virtual machines hosted in the cloud. This allows secure streaming across multiple devices. The Link device aims to simplify this process by minimising setup steps and ensuring seamless transitions between tasks.

The hardware specifications of the Windows 365 Link are not fully disclosed yet. However, it features two USB-A 3.2 ports, one USB-C 3.2 port, a DisplayPort, HDMI port, and ethernet connectivity at the rear. Additionally, there is a front USB-A 3.2 port along with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support.

Security and Connectivity Features

The small OS powering the Link doesn't require extensive management like traditional PCs. It can easily integrate into Microsoft Intune with minimal configuration. David Weston, vice president of enterprise and OS security at Microsoft, describes it as "a super hardened version of Windows," similar to Xbox or phone systems.

This device is particularly suitable for businesses already using Windows 365. It serves as an efficient hot desk PC allowing multiple users to access their individual cloud PCs on the same device. Competitors like HP, Dell, and Lenovo offer similar products at comparable prices.

Market Expansion Plans

Microsoft plans to expand its offerings by collaborating with OEM partners in 2025. "Just like we did with 2in1s," says Davuluri, "we're starting with first-party devices." This strategy aims to refine product experiences before scaling up with partners.

The Link will also be part of Microsoft's Copilot Plus brand which currently includes laptops only. Davuluri explains that they are working on integrating Copilot Plus capabilities into Windows 365 instances in the cloud.

Windows 365 Link's integration with AI experiences could distinguish it from other cloud PC solutions such as Citrix's offerings. The device is currently available for preview in select markets ahead of its official launch next year. This new venture reflects Microsoft's commitment to enhancing user experience through innovative technology solutions while maintaining robust security measures across its platforms.
