Windows 11 is Getting Overhauled: What to Expect in the Upcoming 2024 Update

Microsoft is gearing up for a substantial overhaul of Windows 11 with the upcoming 2024 update, internally known as "version 24H2."

Contrary to earlier speculations about the release of Windows 12, this update promises to bring significant changes, both in terms of features and under-the-hood improvements.

According to insights from Windows Central, the 24H2 update, expected to roll out later this year, will introduce a host of updates touching on various aspects of the operating system. These include:

• Introduction of an advanced Copilot with improved productivity features.
• Ability to create 7zip and TAR compressed archive files.
• Improved performance when opening large ZIP files.
• PNG file support for viewing and editing metadata.
• Integration of machine learning to suggest commonly snapped apps for increased efficiency.
• Paginated Quick Settings interface for easier navigation.
• Refresh button in Wi-Fi list and enhanced VPN management UI.
• Ability to use a linked phone as a webcam.
• New settings page for mobile devices to configure linked phones.
• Introduction of a new Energy Saver mode for both laptops and desktops.
• Reduction in energy consumption for a more eco-friendly computing experience.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

Beyond feature updates, version 24H2 is set to bring improvements in performance, security, user experience, and overall quality of life. Microsoft has been testing these enhancements in the Canary Channel, paving the way for a more polished user experience.

Removal of Legacy Apps

Taking a significant step, Microsoft intends to eliminate several default legacy applications from its software offerings. These apps include Cortana, Mail, Calendar, Maps, People, and Movies & TV.

Additionally, WordPad will be removed in a subsequent update, though its removal is not part of this immediate change.

Timing and Availability

While the update, codenamed Hudson Valley, is expected to be available to manufacturers in April, current Windows 11 users can anticipate its arrival in September. This timeframe aligns with the expected release of next-gen AI PCs and experiences in the market.
