OTA updates to HTC Evo and Samsung Epic models
Sprint, a global service provider for data and internet communications has announced lately that they will be releasing software updates for three of their devices. The models getting the updates are HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO Design 4G and Samsung Epic 4G.
HTC EVO 3D has got the update recently and that has caused some stir in the tech world. The reason is that the new update removes Carrier IQ software from the phone. The company officials have said that they will launch updates for many more devices and with those updates the offending software will be removed from the devices. Carrier IQ software is meant to collect diagnostic information and other data from the users if needed.
Sprint has installed this software in over 26 million of their devices in the past. This software can be used to collect even personal information like phone calls, emails, text messages, photos etc. But the company officials have said that they have never used the software to collect such personal information and the software was primarily used to certify the phones before releasing them and to keep a look out on aggregate data to find out where drop calls and other network problems have occurred.
This is a very bold move by the company to respond quickly to the Carrier IQ scandal that is gaining media attention. This is even though removing the software would mean that the network provider will have to look for some other ways to monitor their network.
HTC EVO 4G will be getting the update some time later in this month. The update will consist of a security update that may be meant to remove the Carrier IQ software. It will also have an updated peep client to synchronize it with the micro blogging site, Twitter. The device will also get improved battery life after the update.
HTC EVO Design 4G will get the security update along with the Peep client improvements. Additionally it will have an improved Sprint Zone client. The battery life will also be improved. There will be access to 3LM Enterprise tools provided with the new update and there won’t be any change in the user interface. This update will be rolling out close to January 24th.
Samsung Epic 4G‘s update will be released any time now. There will be the common security update with it. The speaker feedback problem will be fixed and QIK and Asphalt 5 applications won’t be preloaded. You will have to download and install if you intend to use them.
