Toshiba U840: An Intel Ivy Bridge powered new laptop

Toshiba U840 is an Ivy Bridge powered laptop launched with an impressive design. One of the highlights of this gadget is the inclusion of many utility software packages that make it quite user friendly.

Toshiba U840 is not that slim or light but comfortable enough to carry it around. It is out with a wedge like design and weighs 1.5 kg. It has a very good build and is designed with a mix up of aluminium and plastic for chassis. The overall design aspects are pretty impressive considering the Z830. There is only a little bit flex in the laptop body which is really good.

Toshiba U840 has most of the connectivity options like HDMI, USB 3.0, USB 2.O, SD card reader, LAN jack, microphone and also a headphone jack. The status lights are placed in a visible position so that you won’t miss them. The lid can be folded conveniently to about 170 degree as per user convenience. Users can work in low light conditions with ease using the support of backlit Chiclet keyboard.

The key responsiveness is not that impressive and the plastic mould which holds the key can easily get damaged. The track pad is wide enough to work well, but the mouse buttons need hard press. One of the other drawbacks is that the track pad appears to stop working during the charging process.

Toshiba U840 is powered by Intel’s Ivy Bridge i5-3317U processor which runs at 1.7 GHz clock speed and can operate at higher speed up to 2.6 GHz in Turbo mode. It has a 4 GB RAM stick with a single slot and it can be extended up to 8 GB. Storage features of the laptop include 500 GB primary hard drive and also a 32 GB SSD for the purpose of caching. HD 4000 Intel graphics is adequate for enjoying games and also for HD video decoding.

Toshiba U840 comes with a LED backlit screen of 14 inch with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution and it is adequately bright. The laptop is quite eco friendly as the CPU speed can be scaled down at travel times so as to reduce the battery consumption aiding long time usage. It offers a convenient battery life of about 6 to 7 hours in a single charge.

Toshiba U840 can be purchased at a price tag of around Rs. 54,000/- which seems to be little on the higher side considering its draw backs on the keyboard and track pad. However, we cannot take away the worth of being powered by Ivy bridge processor.
