Google's October 2024 Pixel Drop Is Rolling Out: Underwater Photography, Privacy Upgrades, & More

In a fresh wave of updates, Google is rolling out its October Pixel Drop, adding a host of new features to Pixel phones, tablets, and watches. This update is separate from the Android 15 release, which is also now available for Pixel devices. The latest drop aims to enhance usability with AI-driven tools, camera updates, and new safety functions.

Expanded Use of Gemini AI on Pixel Devices

With the October Pixel Drop, Google is making its Gemini AI assistant more accessible. Originally launched on the Pixel Buds Pro 2, Gemini can now be used across all Pixel Buds models, including the A-Series and first-generation Buds.

Simply say, "Hey Google, let's talk," to engage with Gemini and use it for tasks like navigation, retrieving email details, or brainstorming aloud. Additionally, Gemini is expanding its language support to include German and Portuguese, catering to more users on the go.

Gemini has also been integrated with Pixel Screenshots, allowing users to search saved images effortlessly. For example, you can ask, "Find the brand of sneakers I saved in Screenshots," and Gemini will locate the relevant screenshot instantly.

New Camera and Video Features for Pixel Phones

Pixel phones continue to receive innovative camera tools, with this update focusing on both photography and video enhancements.

• Audio Magic Eraser: Available on Pixel 8 and later, this feature isolates and adjusts specific sounds in videos. Users can enhance voice clarity or tone down background noise for more polished audio.
• Underwater Photography: Pixel 9 devices now offer improved underwater capabilities. With any waterproof case, users can capture vivid underwater photos and videos with more accurate colors.
• Astrophotography in Night Sight: Users can now access the astrophotography mode directly from the Night Sight slider, making it easier to capture stunning images of the night sky. This feature is available on Pixel 6 and newer models.
• Night Sight for Instagram: Night Sight mode can now be used directly within the Instagram app, ensuring low-light photos are captured without a flash.

Safety and Usability Enhancements

Google is also introducing new safety tools and usability features to its devices, including:

• Theft Detection Lock: Using AI and motion sensors, the Theft Detection Lock will automatically secure your phone if suspicious movement, such as a snatch-and-run, is detected. Remote Lock also allows users to lock their device remotely through a security challenge.
• Improved Call Screen in the UK and Japan: Call Screen now offers more natural-sounding responses and displays real-time transcriptions of caller speech. Users can also respond to appointment confirmations without needing to pick up the call.
• Privacy Enhancements: Android 15 introduces a new private space on Pixel phones where sensitive apps can be secured with a separate PIN.
• Pollen Tracker in Weather App: The Pixel Weather app now includes a pollen tracker, helping users monitor allergens before heading outdoors. The app also offers AQI and humidity data across more regions.

Updates for Pixel Watches and Tablets

Pixel Watches also benefit from new features that enhance their functionality and user experience.

• Loss of Pulse Detection: Now available in Belgium, Italy, and Spain, this life-saving feature can detect cardiac arrest and automatically call for emergency help.
• Gmail Emoji Reactions: Users can respond to emails with emojis directly from their watches, adding a playful way to engage with notifications.
• New Contact Tile: The updated contact tile makes it easier to reach frequent contacts with one tap.

Pixel Tablets are also gaining new tools:

• Unified Notifications: Dismissing a notification on the tablet will automatically clear it from your other connected Pixel devices.
• Media Casting: With seamless casting, users can transfer music or videos from their tablet to their phone by simply bringing the two devices close together.
• Smart Home Controls: The home panel screensaver now offers access to smart home controls and camera feeds when the tablet is idle.
