iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro: Is It Finally Time to Upgrade?

The iPhone 18 Pro is a much more interesting upgrade if you're coming from an iPhone 16 Pro than if you bought last year's model. Two generations later, Apple has changed quite a bit under the hood, including the chip, cooling system, camera hardware, charging, and battery life.

There is also a sizeable price gap. The iPhone 16 Pro launched in India at Rs 1,19,900, while the iPhone 18 Pro now starts at Rs 1,64,900. That's Rs 45,000 more than what the 16 Pro cost when it was new.

So, if you already own an iPhone 16 Pro, does the iPhone 18 Pro finally offer enough to justify an upgrade?

Performance and Cooling

The iPhone 16 Pro runs on Apple's A18 Pro, while the iPhone 18 Pro moves to the newer A20 Pro, built on a 2nm process. Apple says the A20 Pro's seven-core GPU is up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro found in the iPhone 17 Pro, while memory bandwidth has increased by 50%. Since Apple is comparing against the A19 Pro there, the gap versus the two-generation-old A18 Pro should be even larger in practice.

The bigger change for an iPhone 16 Pro owner, though, could be sustained performance. The iPhone 18 Pro uses a next-generation vapor chamber with significantly more surface area, which should help it maintain performance for longer during gaming, video editing, and other demanding workloads.

The iPhone 16 Pro relies on Apple's earlier internal thermal architecture rather than a vapor chamber, so this is one of the more meaningful hardware changes across the two generations.

Camera Upgrades

The iPhone 16 Pro already has a strong camera setup, with a 48MP Fusion Main camera, 48MP ultra-wide, and 12MP 5x telephoto camera. The iPhone 18 Pro takes that setup further rather than replacing it entirely.

The biggest addition is variable aperture on the 48MP Fusion Main camera. The newer model can change aperture depending on lighting and depth of field, while Apple's new Pro controls also let users manually adjust aperture, shutter speed, and white balance.

The telephoto camera sees an even bigger hardware jump, moving from 12MP on the iPhone 16 Pro to a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera on the iPhone 18 Pro. The front camera also goes from 12MP to an 18MP Center Stage camera.

If you shoot a lot of photos or video, especially for content creation, these are among the strongest reasons to consider upgrading.

Battery and Charging

Battery life is another area where the two-generation gap starts to show. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 34 hours of video playback, compared with up to 27 hours on the iPhone 16 Pro.

That's a seven-hour improvement on Apple's own video playback metric, and it could be particularly noticeable if the battery in your two-year-old iPhone 16 Pro has already lost some of its original capacity.

Charging is faster too. The iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible charger, making quick top-ups considerably easier.

Apple Trade-In Could Make the Upgrade Easier

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900, which is still a lot of money if your iPhone 16 Pro is working perfectly well.

Apple Trade In can reduce that cost. Apple currently advertises trade-in credits of up to Rs 81,500 toward an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo, although the actual amount depends on the device, configuration, and condition.

Apple doesn't publish one fixed trade-in value for every iPhone 16 Pro on its store, so the exact credit will depend on the individual device. If your phone is in good condition, it's worth checking Apple's trade-in estimate before deciding whether the upgrade makes financial sense.

Should You Upgrade From the iPhone 16 Pro?

The iPhone 16 Pro is still an excellent phone, so this isn't an upgrade everyone needs to make. It still has a 120Hz ProMotion display, strong performance, capable cameras, and support for Apple Intelligence.

But this is also the point where the hardware differences start to feel much more substantial. The iPhone 18 Pro gives you a newer and more powerful chip, proper vapor-chamber cooling, a much better telephoto camera, variable aperture, a better front camera, faster charging, and noticeably longer quoted battery life.

If you shoot a lot of content, game heavily, or simply want a phone you plan to keep for another three or four years, the iPhone 18 Pro is a much easier upgrade to justify from the iPhone 16 Pro than it is from last year's model.

The biggest hurdle is still the price. At Rs 1,64,900, I wouldn't rush to upgrade if you're happy with your 16 Pro. But if Apple offers you a strong trade-in value, that can change the equation considerably and make the jump to the 18 Pro much easier to justify.
