GTA 6 Extended Look: 5 Biggest Things We Learned From the Netflix Showcase

After years of waiting, leaks and speculation, Rockstar Games finally gave fans their most substantial look yet at Grand Theft Auto VI. The 26-minute Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27, offering an extended preview of gameplay, characters, missions and the sprawling world of Leonida before the footage was made available elsewhere. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

While Rockstar still kept several details under wraps, the presentation answered many questions about how GTA 6 will actually play. From its dual protagonists to a more reactive police system and a far more detailed open world, here are five of the biggest things we learned.

1. Jason and Lucia are the heart of GTA 6

The biggest takeaway is that Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are much more interconnected than GTA V's protagonists. The pair form the centre of the game's story and are presented as partners in both crime and life, with their relationship playing an important role in the campaign.

The footage showed the two characters working together during robberies and shootouts, while also demonstrating how players can switch between them during missions. In one sequence, the perspective moves between Jason and Lucia while one character drives and the other engages enemies. Players can also switch between them when they are in different locations.

The Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic is clearly intentional. The attached reference notes that Jason is portrayed as a relatively reserved former military man involved in the criminal underworld, while Lucia is a more assertive figure who has recently left prison.

That relationship could ultimately become one of the defining differences between GTA 6 and its predecessors.

2. Police Chases are More Tactical

Rockstar appears to be making the traditional GTA wanted system considerably more sophisticated.

The Extended Look showed that escaping the police may require more than simply driving at maximum speed. During one chase, Jason and Lucia change vehicles before setting their stolen car on fire, demonstrating how players may have to think about eliminating evidence and making themselves harder to track.

Recent previews have also revealed that police can use information about a suspect's appearance, clothing and vehicle when searching for them. The classic six-star wanted system is returning, but Rockstar appears to be putting more emphasis on how law enforcement actually responds to criminal activity.

Combat has received a similar rethink. Players can target specific parts of an enemy's body, potentially disarming or incapacitating opponents rather than simply shooting them until they are eliminated. The system gives firefights a more deliberate feel than the run-and-gun approach traditionally associated with GTA.

3. Leonida is Packed with Things to Do

The Extended Look made it clear that GTA 6's open world is about much more than driving between mission markers.

The game features a broad range of activities, including scuba diving, parachuting, kayaking, racing, dirt-bike events and other water-based activities. The footage even showed players interacting with dogs, highlighting the increased level of environmental interaction Rockstar is bringing to the game.

The attached reference similarly highlights base jumping, scuba diving, racing and underwater exploration, suggesting that Leonida has been designed to encourage players to explore vertically as well as horizontally.

The scale of the world is also impressive. Rockstar is combining Vice City's urban environment with surrounding regions, rural areas and waterways, giving players considerably more variety than the city-focused experience of GTA V.

4. Rockstar is Making its Characters Feel More Alive

GTA 6 appears to be taking the character simulation systems introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2 and expanding them.

Jason and Lucia can eat, drink and exercise, with their physical appearance changing based on their lifestyle. The Extended Look showed Lucia working out, while other footage has shown the protagonists engaging in ordinary activities around their safehouses.

The world itself is similarly interactive. NPCs have more varied behaviours and reactions, while small interactions help make Leonida feel like a functioning place rather than a collection of mission locations. The attached material specifically points to everyday activities, including drinking from refrigerators, exercising and interacting with animals.

Rockstar also appears to be expanding its character-behaviour and progression systems. A morality or honour-style mechanic has been spotted in the game's interface, although Rockstar has not fully explained exactly how it will affect the story.

5. Social media is now part of the GTA satire

Perhaps the most obvious example of Rockstar updating GTA for the modern world is its treatment of social media.

One sequence shows Lucia stealing a car only to discover someone hiding inside. That person is filming a viral stunt and continues livestreaming during the resulting police chase, with comments appearing on screen.

This is exactly the kind of contemporary satire GTA has always been known for, but the target has changed. GTA V mocked smartphones, reality television and early social networks. GTA 6 can now take aim at livestreaming, viral challenges, influencers and the obsession with online attention.

The music is also getting a modern update. Rockstar is combining classic tracks with contemporary hip-hop, pop, rock and Latin music, continuing one of the franchise's most recognisable traditions while reflecting the modern identity of Vice City.

GTA 6 is Shaping up to be More Than a Bigger GTA

The most important lesson from the Extended Look is that Rockstar isn't simply making GTA V with better graphics. The studio appears to be rebuilding many of the systems underneath the open world, from police behaviour and combat to NPC interactions, character progression and exploration.

Most importantly, all of these systems appear to work together around Jason and Lucia. Their relationship, criminal activities and attempts to survive in Leonida are designed to make the world feel reactive to what the player does.

After last night's showcase, the biggest question is no longer what GTA 6 will look like. It's how much Rockstar is still keeping hidden.

With the release now scheduled for November 19, 2026, the wait continues.
