PS5 & Xbox Series X/S are Getting More Expensive with Age, and GTA 6 Arrives Right In The Middle Of It

GTA 6 launches on November 19, and Rockstar has priced it at Rs 5,999 for the Standard Edition and Rs 7,499 for the Ultimate Edition in India, which is actually one of the cheapest prices anywhere in the world, since only South Korea and Japan pay less after conversion, while buyers in the United States spend around Rs 7,565 for the same Standard Edition.

The trouble is that the game is the smallest part of what you will end up spending, because GTA 6 runs only on a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X/S at launch; there is no PC version, and going by Rockstar's history with earlier titles, a Windows release is unlikely before 2027 or 2028.

So if you game on a PC, playing GTA 6 this year means buying a console, and that has become both more expensive and, in one case, almost impossible.

Why Every Console Got More Expensive at Once

The reason is not tariffs, and it is not Indian import duty. It is memory and storage.

AI data center demand has consumed the world's supply of DRAM and NAND flash, and consoles are exposed because they are built almost entirely around fast memory and solid-state storage. The scale of it is easy to underestimate. DRAM prices rose around 90 percent in the first quarter of 2026 alone, and data centers now account for roughly 70 percent of all memory chips produced worldwide. SK Hynix had already sold every gigabyte of its 2026 production by October 2025, and its chief executive said in July that the shortage will probably last well beyond 2030.

Microsoft has been unusually blunt about it, saying console storage and memory prices have risen more than two and a half times since its last increase, and that it expects them to double again by autumn 2027.

The result is that a console generation is getting more expensive as it ages, which has simply never happened before in this industry. Sony raised PS5 prices globally in April, Microsoft raised Xbox prices last October and is doing it again, and Nintendo has moved too.

What the PlayStation Route Costs

Sony's India revision landed last week, pushing the PS5 Slim Disc Edition from Rs 54,990 to Rs 69,990, a jump of Rs 15,000 or roughly 28 percent. Against its Rs 49,900 India launch price, buyers are now paying about 40 percent more for a five-year-old machine. Add the Standard Edition of the game and the entry ticket to GTA 6 on PlayStation, and the total comes to around Rs 76,000 on the disc model.

The Disc Premium Buys You Nothing, and It Is About to Buy Nobody Anything

Rockstar has confirmed that the physical edition of GTA 6 is a box containing a download code, not a physical one. So the disc drive that separates the Standard PS5 from the Digital Edition does nothing at all for this particular game.

That is not a one-off decision by Rockstar. Sony announced in July that it will stop producing discs for all new PlayStation games from January 2028, after which new releases will be sold digitally only, both on PlayStation Store and at retail. Stores will move to a code-in-a-box model, which is exactly what GTA 6 is doing fourteen months early. Sony has not softened on it either. Sony has not softened on it either. Asked about the backlash during a Q&A on July 31, following its first-quarter earnings, CFO Lin Tao told investors the company is not seeing any impact on its business and does not expect one, pointing to digital downloads already accounting for over 80 percent of full-game sales on PlayStation.

Moving away from discs also removes the secondhand market from the equation, which has always been the one force capable of pushing game prices down after launch.

The Xbox Option That Does Not Really Exist in India

On paper, this is where the story should turn. The Xbox Series S has always been the cheapest way into current-generation console gaming; it launched in India at Rs 34,990, and it plays GTA 6 on the same day as everything else because Rockstar has given neither platform an exclusivity window.

In practice, you cannot walk into this option. Official stock of both the Series S and the Series X has been effectively absent from Indian retail, and what is available is largely coming through unauthorized sellers asking upwards of Rs 70,000 for a Series S, which is more than an official PS5 costs.

What That Actually Means for Indian Buyers

Strip it down, and the picture is uncomfortable. India is a market where the affordable console is unavailable, and the expensive one just got Rs 15,000 more expensive, which are not unrelated facts.

Sony raised PS5 prices here into a market with no meaningful competitor on the shelf. Buyers had nowhere cheaper to switch to, retailers had no leverage to push back, and Sony faced no risk of losing volume to Microsoft. Whatever the memory shortage justified globally, the reason the hike sticks so cleanly in India is that there is nowhere else to go.

If You Already Own a PS5

Then the expensive part is behind you, and the remaining cost is storage. GTA 6 will be one of the largest installs on the platform, and the PS5's usable space after the system takes its share leaves less room than the box suggests.

Clearing older titles is the free option. Buying an expansion SSD is not, because those use the same NAND flash that is driving every other price in this story, and console expansion storage is subject to the same cost pressure that has pushed retail SSD prices up. If you are going to need one (only if super, super necessary), buying it before November is better than buying it in the launch week rush.

So What Should You Actually Do?

If you want GTA 6 on day one in India, the PS5 Digital Edition is now effectively the only legitimate route, and you should skip the disc model because the disc buys you nothing for this game and will buy nobody anything after 2027.

If Rs 70,000 for the hardware alone is not a number that works for you, and for most people it will not be, the honest advice is that waiting is the better call. Rockstar's own history gives you a rough window. GTA 5 took about nineteen months to reach PC after its console release, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took about twelve, which puts a GTA 6 PC version somewhere between late 2027 and the middle of 2028.

What is worth being honest about is that waiting is not free either. The memory shortage hitting consoles is hitting PC components just as hard, with consumer SSD prices having roughly doubled and Valve's Steam Machine arriving at $1,049, some $300 to $350 above what the company had reportedly targeted before the shortage forced its hand. If your PC needs an upgrade to run GTA 6 in 2028, that upgrade will not be cheap.

Still, a two-year wait for a game everyone will have finished discussing is a better deal than paying Rs 70,000 to an unverified seller for a console that was meant to be the affordable one.
