Helldivers 2, the latest offering from Arrowhead Game Studios, has shattered sales records for PlayStation, marking a significant achievement for Sony. Within the first 12 weeks of its release, the game sold an impressive 12 million units.

This milestone makes Helldivers 2 the fastest-selling PlayStation title, dethroning the launch success of God of War Ragnarök. The success of this shooter reflects its appeal on both the PlayStation 5 and PC platforms.

Helldivers 2 Remarkable Sales Figures

Launched on February 8 on PS5 and PC, Helldivers 2 quickly became a hit, surprising both gamers and industry insiders. By May 5, 2024, the game had reached the 12 million sales mark.

This achievement underscores the game's broad appeal and the effective cross-platform strategy employed by Sony. In comparison, God of War Ragnarök, the previous record holder, sold 11 million copies within its first 10 weeks.

The PlayStation 5 has also seen remarkable sales figures, with 20.8 million units sold in the fiscal year 2023, bringing the total sales to 59.2 million units since its launch in November 2020. Despite this success, Sony anticipates a slight decline in PS5 sales, projecting 18 million units sold in the fiscal year 2024.

Helldivers 2's Commercial Success

However, Sony recently faced criticism for requiring PC players to link their PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts with Steam to play Helldivers 2. Following a negative reaction from the community, Sony reversed this decision, showing responsiveness to player feedback.

Looking ahead, Sony is excited about the future of live service games, with titles like Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Concord slated for release in 2024. Despite an expected downturn in PS5 sales as the console matures, the growth of PS Plus subscriptions-to 47.4 million-suggests a healthy ecosystem.
