Nintendo Switch 2: Leaks and Renders Point to a Bigger Display, Improved Design, and Rumored Release Timeline

The buzz around the Nintendo Switch 2 is hard to miss. Fans of the gaming giant have been eagerly awaiting details about the next-gen console, even as Nintendo remains tight-lipped about its development. While no official announcement has been made, leaks and mockups have given us a glimpse of what might be in store.

From design changes to a potential release date, here's a breakdown of everything we've learned so far.

Nintendo Switch 2 New Rumors: Is a March 2025 Release on the Horizon?

A Larger Display and Updated Design

According to renders shared by 91mobiles and OnLeaks, the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a larger 8.4-inch screen, a significant increase from the 7-inch OLED display on the current model. While the specific panel type hasn't been confirmed, an OLED upgrade seems likely given its popularity with the Switch OLED.

The console itself is expected to be larger, measuring approximately 271 x 116.4 x 31.4mm with Joy-Cons attached. For comparison, the current Switch OLED comes in at 241 x 102 x 14mm. The Joy-Cons themselves appear slightly bigger, potentially improving ergonomics. However, their design remains familiar, with a new button spotted above the "Home" button on the right Joy-Con.

Hardware Improvements and User-Friendly Additions

The leaks reveal thoughtful hardware improvements. The Switch 2 will reportedly include a USB-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio, and a redesigned kickstand that seems sturdier than its predecessor. Notably, the game card slot remains, suggesting backward compatibility with current Switch titles.

At the back, the U-shaped kickstand appears to cater to tabletop gaming enthusiasts. According to 91mobiles, this design improves upon even the Switch OLED's kickstand, which was already a step up from the original Switch.

CES 2025: Mockups Add to the Speculation

The recent CES 2025 event added fuel to the fire. Reports from the French blog Numerama showcased mockups of the Nintendo Switch 2 from accessory makers like Genki. These mockups, allegedly based on the actual console design, suggest that accessory makers are already preparing for the console's launch. Genki even claimed their products would hit stores alongside the Switch 2, possibly as early as April.

Interestingly, Numerama also reported that some accessory vendors hinted at the console being available on the black market.

When Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Be Released?

While Nintendo hasn't confirmed a release date, several leaks point to a March or April launch. An unnamed source familiar with the supply chain previously told Numerama that the console could be announced by the end of March, with preorders opening shortly after. A specific date, March 28th, has even been floated.

Given the steady stream of leaks and the readiness of accessory makers, this timeline feels plausible. However, until Nintendo makes an official statement, it's best to approach these dates with cautious optimism.

What This Means for Gamers

The original Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, was a game-changer, blending the portability of a handheld console with the versatility of a home system. But with growing competition from devices like the Steam Deck and handheld PCs, the Switch 2 faces a more crowded market.

If the leaks are accurate, the Switch 2's larger screen, ergonomic improvements, and backward compatibility could make it a worthy successor. However, its success will also depend on factors like price, battery life, and game library expansion.
