Apple’s AI-Powered Smart Home Hub Could Arrive by Year-End—But It’s Not the Robotic One Yet

Apple is taking measured steps into the smart home hardware space, with a new AI-infused home hub expected to debut later this year. While reports of a more advanced device featuring a robotic arm continue to surface, it appears the Cupertino company is opting for a more modest first move.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's first smart home hub will prioritize affordability and simplicity, laying the groundwork for more ambitious designs in the future.

Apple’s Smart Home Hub With AI and homeOS Could Launch by Year-End

What to Expect from Apple's First Smart Home Hub

Codenamed J490, the device is expected to feature a 7-inch touchscreen, resembling a square iPad, and will come equipped with a camera at the top. Internal speakers and a built-in battery could make the device more flexible for users to place it anywhere around the home.

One of the more intriguing aspects of the new device is its software. Gurman notes that this smart display will be powered by homeOS, a new operating system from Apple. It's reportedly a hybrid of the Apple Watch's watchOS and the StandBy mode from iOS, offering a simplified, always-on interface that blends touch controls with passive information display.

This new OS could be the first glimpse into Apple's broader strategy to fuse its device ecosystem more tightly around the home, particularly through AI integration.

A Glimpse Into Apple's AI Play

Support for Apple Intelligence-Apple's new branding for its AI-powered features-is expected to be baked into the hub. While we don't yet have the full scope of what that includes, the company seems to be positioning this as a more intuitive, responsive centerpiece for the home.

Instead of a traditional smart speaker or display that simply answers questions or sets timers, Apple's AI hub may serve as a central interface for your digital life, bridging HomeKit, health features, messages, and possibly even third-party services.

The Robotic Arm Version Is Still in the Works

Although Apple's smart home strategy begins modestly, the company hasn't scrapped its more futuristic designs. A second, more advanced model-codenamed J595-is said to be in development. This version reportedly includes a robotic arm that allows the display to swivel or follow a user around the room, adding a physical dimension to its responsiveness.

However, development delays mean this robotic iteration likely won't launch for at least another year or two.
