Airtel Data Loan: How to Get 1GB Loan – Benefits, Charges, and How to Apply
If you use an Airtel prepaid plan, you've probably hit that frustrating moment where your daily data runs out just when you need it most, whether during a call, a payment, or even just mid-scroll. I was in that exact spot recently and decided to try something I hadn't used before: Airtel's 1GB data loan.
To my surprise, it worked instantly and required almost no effort. Here's exactly what I did, how it worked, and what you should know if you're planning to use it too.

What Is the Airtel Data Loan?
Airtel's data loan lets prepaid users borrow 1GB of extra data for a day. It's meant to be a backup option for moments when you've exhausted your daily data quota and need a bit more to get through the rest of the day.
This 1GB loan isn't free, you don't pay anything upfront, but the amount is deducted automatically from your next data plan recharge. The borrowed data is valid only until 11:59 PM on the day you take it.
How I Got the Loan Through the Airtel Thanks App
Here's the exact process I followed:
- I opened the Airtel Thanks app on my phone.
- In the search bar at the top, I typed "data loan."
- Immediately, a page showed up offering me a 1GB loan.
- I tapped the button to request it. No extra confirmation, no OTP, no pop-ups.
- The data was added instantly. My daily balance increased by 1GB, so instead of my usual 2GB/day, I now had 3GB to use for the day.
There was no noticeable delay, and the process took less than 30 seconds from start to finish.
How to Get the Loan Using USSD Code
If you don't use the Airtel Thanks app, you can still take the loan by dialing a USSD code:
- Open your phone dialer.
- Dial
*567*3#from your Airtel number.
- You'll see an option to take a 1GB data loan.
- Follow the prompts to confirm, and the data will be credited instantly.
This method works on any phone-smart or basic-and doesn't require an internet connection.
When Does It Expire?
The 1GB data loan is only valid until 11:59 PM on the same day you request it. It doesn't roll over, and you won't be able to use any leftover data the next day. So it's best to take it only if you're sure you'll need and use that extra GB.
What About the Charges?
There's no pop-up or breakdown that tells you exactly how much will be deducted later, but Airtel confirms that the amount is adjusted from your next prepaid recharge. So if you take the loan today and recharge tomorrow, part of that recharge will go toward repaying the loan.
You can't take another data loan until the previous one is settled.
Why It's Worth Using
This feature is helpful when you need a quick data boost but don't want to commit to a full recharge. It's fast, doesn't require upfront payment, and works whether you use the app or USSD code. If you're stuck with zero data and need just a little more to get by, this is a practical option.
