Android Canary 2507 Update Adds Linux App Support and Upgraded Dark Mode for Pixel: How to Test It

Google’s latest experimental Android update is here, and it’s not your usual beta. The Android Canary 2507 release is now rolling out to Pixel devices, offering early access to in-progress features like graphical Linux app support and a new take on dark mode.

But unless you’re a developer—or have a spare Pixel lying around—you might want to hold off.

Android Canary 2507 Drops New Features for Pixel — How to Test It

Android Canary Is the New Developer Preview

If you’ve followed Android’s development cycle before, you probably remember the old Developer Previews. Those are now gone. Google has replaced them with the Android Canary channel, a more experimental stream of updates aimed at developers who want to test features early—really early.

The Canary 2507 update is just the second one to roll out under this new system, and it's already showing off some changes that might eventually make it to stable Android builds. For now, though, they’re in the rough.

Compatible Devices for Android Canary 2507

The update is available for a handful of Pixel phones and tablets, including:

  • Pixel 9 series
  • Pixel 8 series
  • Pixel 7 series
  • Pixel 6 series
  • Pixel Fold
  • Pixel Tablet

If you’re running any of these, you technically can install Canary 2507. But Google’s made it clear this build is not meant for daily use. Bugs are expected. Features might break. And if you're installing this on your main phone, you’re probably going to regret it.

So if you're curious, go ahead—but try it on a backup device.

What’s New in Canary 2507?

There are two standout features being reported by early testers:

Linux Apps with a GUI

According to Android Authority, the update brings graphical Linux app support to Android through Google’s Linux Terminal app. That app lets users run the Debian OS in a virtual machine—and now, you can apparently run GUI-based Linux apps within that setup.

It’s the kind of feature that’s likely only going to appeal to devs or advanced users. Still, it’s a notable step toward making Android more flexible as a development environment.

Dark Mode Gets Smarter

Canary 2507 also appears to include an expanded dark mode setting. It’s reportedly capable of forcing dark mode in apps that don’t support it natively, using a new option hidden inside Pixel’s theme settings.

This sounds like a more polished version of the “override force-dark” toggle that’s been tucked away in Developer Options for years. If it works well, it could help unify the look of your phone—especially if you hate blinding white screens in otherwise dark themes.

Should You Try It?

Unless you’re building apps or enjoy poking around with unstable builds, probably not. Canary releases are intentionally raw. Even Google calls them “highly experimental,” and notes they may cause issues with your phone’s normal operation.

That said, if you’re the kind of person who likes to be first in line to test new Android features—or you’ve got an old Pixel around—you might find it fun to explore.
