How to Lock Individual WhatsApp Chats - Step-By-Step Guide
Looking to keep some WhatsApp conversations more secure? Whether it's confidential work discussions or personal chats you want to keep private, WhatsApp offers a feature to lock individual chats using your fingerprint or Face ID. This ensures that only you can access these specific conversations, even if someone else has your phone.
To read messages in a locked chat, you'll need to unlock them using device authentication methods like your phone passcode, Face ID, fingerprint, or a secret code of your choice. When chats are locked, notification content and contact details remain hidden. Notifications will simply display as "WhatsApp: 1 new message." In this guide, we'll walk you through how to enable the chat lock and manage it with ease.

How to Lock Individual WhatsApp Chats
You can enable or disable chat lock for any conversation, including group chats and muted chats. If you haven't set up device authentication (like your phone passcode or fingerprint), you'll be asked to do so before locking a chat. Then you can follow these steps to lock a chat:
Step 1: Tap and hold the chat you want to lock
Step 2: Tap more options > Lock Chat.
Additionally, you can set up a secret code, which is separate from your phone's passcode, for even more privacy. To do this, create a secret code after turning the chat lock on. For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: First, tap on the Locked chats > more options > Chat lock settings > Secret code.
Step 2: Enter your code and tap Next.
Step 3: Then enter your code again to confirm and tap Done.
How to View Locked Chats
As noted, when chats are locked, message previews and contact details are hidden in notifications. You'll only see a generic message like "WhatsApp: 1 new message."
To view locked chats:
Step 1: Tap Locked chats and use your fingerprint, Face ID, or passcode to access them.
To view chats locked with a secret code:
Step 1: Tap Search at the top of your chat screen.
Step 2: Enter your secret code to view chat.
How to Unlock Locked Chats
You can remove all locks and delete the content of those chats if needed. Once unlocked and cleared, the chats return to your main chat list, but all messages and media will be cleared. If you've set up a secret code, that will also be removed.
To unlock and clear locked chats:
Step 1: Go to Settings > Privacy > Chat Lock.
Step 2: Tap Unlock and clear locked chats.
Step 3: Confirm your action.
This feature is available on both Android and iOS. Make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version to access it. Locking individual WhatsApp chats using fingerprint, Face ID, or a secret code offers enhanced privacy and control over your personal conversations. This feature is especially useful for safeguarding sensitive chats-be it personal, professional, or financial-without needing to lock the entire app.
Once enabled, it ensures that only you can access those specific chats, even if someone else is using your phone. Locked chats are kept in a separate folder, and their message content and contact details are hidden from notifications, adding an extra layer of discretion.
