How to Remove Photos from Google Photos Backup Without Deleting Them
Google Photos has long been a go-to solution for backing up photos and videos, making sure your memories stay safe even if your phone is lost or damaged. But what if you no longer want to store your media in Google's cloud while keeping them on your device? Until now, that's been tricky-removing photos from Google Photos often meant deleting them from your phone too.
With its latest "Undo device backup" feature, Google Photos now allows users to remove their backed-up media from the cloud while keeping everything intact on their device. Initially introduced on iOS last December, the feature is now available on Android as part of Google Photos version 7.18.

Why Would You Want to Undo a Backup?
Cloud storage is a great safety net, but not everyone wants their entire gallery backed up automatically. There are several reasons why you might want to remove your media from Google Photos without deleting it from your phone:
- Switching to another cloud service - If you're moving from Android to iPhone, you might prefer iCloud over Google Photos.
- More control over your data - Not everyone wants their entire photo collection stored on Google's servers.
- Managing cloud storage limits - Google Photos offers limited free storage, so keeping only essential photos backed up can help you save space.
- Privacy concerns - Some users prefer to keep sensitive photos offline rather than relying on cloud security.
This new feature gives you the flexibility to opt out of cloud storage without disrupting your local gallery.
How to Use "Undo Device Backup" on Google Photos
If you want to remove your photos and videos from Google's cloud while keeping them on your phone, here's how to do it:
- Open the Google Photos app on your Android or iPhone.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top right corner.
- Go to Photos settings > Backup.
- Scroll down and select Undo backup for this device.
- Check the confirmation box that states your photos and videos will be removed from Google Photos but will remain on your device.
- Tap Delete Google Photos backup to finalize the process.
Once you complete these steps, Google Photos backup will be turned off for your device, meaning no new photos or videos will be uploaded to the cloud automatically.
What Happens After You Undo a Backup?
- Your photos and videos will stay on your phone or tablet-you're not losing anything locally.
- They will be removed from Google Photos' cloud storage, including shared albums, search results, and Memories.
- Google Photos will stop automatically backing up your new media unless you manually enable it again.
This means your photos will still be accessible in your phone's gallery, but they won't appear in Google's cloud-based features.
