Forgot Lyrics? YouTube Music Now Lets You Hum to Find That Song Using AI

Ever hear a song but can't remember the lyrics or even the artist's name? It happens to the best of us. But fret no more, music lovers! YouTube Music on Android now has a nifty new feature called "Hum to Search" that can help you identify those mysterious melodies stuck in your head, using AI, of course.

How it Works?

When you hum a melody, the app uses AI to convert your hum into a digital format, translating it into a sequence of numbers. The AI then compares this digital representation against the melodies in YouTube Music's vast song library.

By focusing on the unique characteristics of the melody, the AI identifies songs that most closely match your hum. Finally, the app presents a list of potential matches, including the song title, artist name, and album art.

How Hum to Search Works on Your Android Device

  1. Fire Up YouTube Music: Grab your Android phone and launch the YouTube Music app.
  2. Initiate the Search: Tap the search bar located conveniently in the top right corner of the app.
  3. Look for the Waveform Icon: Beside the familiar microphone icon, you'll see a new waveform icon. That's your gateway to humming glory! Tap it.
  4. Hum Away! You'll be greeted by a prompt that says "Play, sing, or hum a song." Take a deep breath and do your best rendition of the melody you're trying to identify. The app is listening!
  5. Matching the Mystery Tune: YouTube Music will analyze the audio you provided and scour its vast library to find matches. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to compare your hummed melody to the original recordings, so even if you're not the world's best vocalist, there's a good chance it'll understand you.
  6. Potential Matches Revealed: Based on your humming prowess, the app will display a list of potential song matches. Each entry will include the song title, artist name, and album art, making it easier to identify the correct one.
  7. Mission Accomplished! Once you find the song you were searching for, you can simply tap on it to start listening or save it to your music library for later enjoyment.

Availability and Additional Notes

The "Hum to Search" feature is currently rolling out to YouTube Music users on Android devices with version 7.02 or later. It's a gradual process, so don't worry if you don't see it right away. The feature is expected to be available to everyone soon.

This functionality isn't limited to just English. YouTube Music's "Hum to Search" can recognize humming in Hindi and several other languages, making it even more versatile.

Google's Humming History

While "Hum to Search" might feel new in YouTube Music, it's actually not the first time Google has implemented this technology. Similar features already exist in other Google apps like Google Search, Google Assistant, Google Podcasts, and even YouTube (for iOS users). Additionally, Pixel smartphones boast a unique "Now Playing" feature that can automatically identify songs playing in your surroundings.

A Challenger to Shazam?

Shazam, a popular app acquired by Apple in 2018, has long been a leader in audio recognition for song identification. However, YouTube Music's "Hum to Search" is seen as a potential competitor. Early reports suggest it might even be faster and more accurate than Shazam, making it a strong contender in the music identification arena.
