Google for India 2024 Highlights: Key Updates Announced to Gemini AI, Maps, Digital Payments, More
At the Google for India 2024 event, a significant focus was placed on how artificial intelligence (AI) can fundamentally change India, marking 20 years of Google's presence in the country.
The introduction of Gemini, Google's most sophisticated AI model to date, stands out as a pivotal development. This model now supports Hindi through Gemini Live, with plans to include eight more Indian languages, catering to the 40% of Indian users who prefer local languages for voice interactions.

Beyond Gemini AI
The company is not just focusing on language inclusivity but also on making information more accessible across diverse linguistic backgrounds. The Google AI Overview, previously available in Hindi, has extended its reach to Bengali, Telugu, and Marathi speakers.
This expansion is coupled with enhancements in Google Maps, which now offers real-time updates on fog and flooding. Such features are particularly beneficial in India, known for its varied weather patterns.
Enhancements in Healthcare and Digital Payments
To revolutionize healthcare, Google has introduced AI-powered tools for cancer and tuberculosis screening currently being tested in Indian hospitals. This initiative, which aims to provide these screenings for free over the next ten years, reflects Google's commitment to improving health outcomes in India. This is part of a larger vision to leverage AI for societal benefits.
On the digital payments front, Google has announced enhancements to Google Pay, which serves 35 million users across India. Notably, the UPI Circle feature allows payments on behalf of others, simplifying transactions within families. Furthermore, Google Pay has increased its loan offering limits to Rs 5 lakh and introduced the option to apply for gold loans up to ₹50 lakh, demonstrating its expanding role in India's digital economy.
Supporting Merchants and Enhancing Cybersecurity
Google is also facilitating easier interactions between merchants and customers by integrating WhatsApp contact options on Google business pages. This India-first initiative allows users to text businesses directly on WhatsApp, beyond the traditional phone call communications.
Moreover, Google has addressed data storage and cybersecurity concerns by expanding the Gemini 1.5 Flash data localisation in India. This move enables companies to store data locally, aligning with India's stringent data protection regulations. Additionally, the launch of the Safety Engineering System in 2025 will bolster the anti-fraud initiative *DigiKavach*, enhancing data security across the board.
Google's Role in Shaping India's Digital Future
In line with its environmental commitments, Google has announced its goal to achieve 24/7 carbon-free energy, having added 186 MW of clean energy to India's grid in collaboration with the Adani Group for a solar farm in Gujarat. This initiative is part of Google's broader sustainability agenda aimed at improving air quality and promoting clean energy access in India.
Google's deepened commitment to India's digital advancement is evident in its latest initiatives, from expanding AI capabilities to introducing health screening tools and supporting digital payments. These developments underscore Google's role in shaping India's technological future, emphasizing AI's potential to address local needs.
The event highlighted Google's ongoing efforts to tailor its technologies to enhance the lives of Indian users, showcasing a promising path toward digital inclusivity and sustainability.
