IRCTC is Launching a New Website: These Features Could Change How You Book Train Tickets
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to unveil its redesigned ticket booking website on July 15, 2026, marking one of the biggest digital upgrades to the railway reservation system in recent years. The overhaul aims to tackle long-standing issues such as slow loading speeds, failed transactions, and frequent crashes during peak booking hours, particularly during Tatkal reservations.
The initiative was reportedly launched after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw interacted with students in Rajasthan, who highlighted the challenges of booking train tickets through the existing portal. Their feedback prompted Indian Railways to modernise the platform with a stronger backend and a more user-friendly interface.

Built to Handle Peak Booking Rush
The biggest improvement lies beneath the surface. The upgraded platform has been designed to support significantly higher traffic than the existing website, which often struggles when thousands of users attempt to book tickets simultaneously.
According to reports, the new system will be capable of handling over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, compared to around 32,000 bookings per minute on the current platform. Similarly, enquiry capacity is expected to increase from 4 lakh to nearly 40 lakh enquiries every minute.
For passengers, this should translate into fewer crashes, faster page loading, and lower chances of payment failures during busy booking windows.
A Simpler and Faster Booking Experience
Beyond performance improvements, the redesigned IRCTC website is expected to offer a much cleaner interface. The focus is on reducing unnecessary distractions while shortening the journey from train search to payment confirmation.
Several new features are expected to debut with the update, including:
- Integrated fare calendar to compare ticket prices across multiple travel dates
- Seat availability for all classes on a single screen
- Option to choose berth preferences, such as lower or window seats
- Fewer CAPTCHA checks during booking
- Reduced advertisements and promotional banners throughout the booking process
Together, these additions are expected to make booking train tickets quicker and less frustrating, especially during high-demand reservation periods.
Better Accessibility for Indian Travellers
The updated platform also places greater emphasis on accessibility. Reports suggest the portal will support multiple Indian languages, making online reservations easier for passengers who are more comfortable using regional languages.
Indian Railways is also expected to streamline bookings for special categories such as Divyangjan passengers, students, and certified patients by bringing concession-related services under a unified booking workflow instead of separate verification systems.
Will the New Website Launch Today?
While July 15 has been widely reported as the target rollout date, some reports indicate the launch could slip to the second week of August 2026. The delay would reportedly allow Indian Railways to conduct additional testing before making the platform available nationwide, particularly ahead of the Independence Day travel rush.
However, IRCTC has yet to officially confirm whether the launch schedule has changed.
Part of a Larger Railway Modernisation Drive
The website redesign is just one of several reforms announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw this week. Indian Railways has also introduced 52 structural reforms, including stricter contractor eligibility norms, a new digital land acquisition platform called Rail Bhoomi, and freight transport measures such as allowing industries to develop specialised wagons and increasing the use of sealed containers for fly ash transportation.
While many of these initiatives focus on infrastructure, the redesigned IRCTC website is likely to be the most visible change for everyday passengers. If the promised upgrades perform as expected, booking train tickets could finally become faster, smoother, and more reliable for millions of users across the country.
