AI-Powered Device Successfully Treats Life-Threatening Blood Clot in Groundbreaking Procedure
A 28-year-old man with acute pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) was successfully treated using a new AI-powered device, according to TOI. Pulmonary thromboembolism occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs, potentially causing severe damage or death. This condition is one of the most serious complications related to blood clots.

AI-Powered Device for Blood Clot Removal
Dr. VS Bedi, chairman of vascular surgery at Sir Gangaram Hospital, used an AI-driven device to treat the patient. "The AI in the machine helps it target only the clots, avoiding sucking of normal blood and reducing the risks of severe blood loss causing hypotension and other complications associated with older methods," he explained.
The patient had experienced chest pain, breathing difficulty, and swelling in his left leg for three days before arriving at Sir Gangaram Hospital. He had sought treatment at other hospitals without finding relief. Upon arrival, he was immediately taken for thrombosuction using the AI-powered device.
Advantages Over Conventional Treatments
This innovative method eliminates the need for procedures like inferior vena cava (IVC) filter insertion and thrombolytic agent infusion. These traditional treatments carry significant risks, including internal bleeding in the brain and intestines. The AI-powered device functions like a vacuum machine, removing blood clots with minimal blood loss.
Conventional treatments for pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) often involve procedures that pose dangers such as bleeding and repeated interventions. The new device avoids these risks by targeting only clots, thus preventing severe blood loss.
Potential of AI in Medical Procedures
The patient's successful treatment highlights the potential of AI in medical procedures. This approach not only reduces complications but also offers a safer alternative to traditional methods.
The use of this AI-powered device marks a significant advancement in treating conditions like PE and DVT. It demonstrates how technology can improve patient outcomes by minimizing risks associated with conventional treatments.
This case underscores the importance of continued innovation in medical technology. By leveraging AI, healthcare providers can offer more precise and safer treatments for life-threatening conditions.
