OpenAI and Microsoft Investigate Alleged AI Model Theft by Chinese Startup DeepSeek

DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence firm, has stirred Silicon Valley by releasing AI models that rival those from OpenAI. However, OpenAI suspects these models might be based on its own data. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI and Microsoft are investigating whether DeepSeek used OpenAI's API to incorporate its AI models into their own.

Microsoft's security team reportedly noticed significant data extraction from OpenAI developer accounts in late 2024. These accounts are believed to be linked to DeepSeek. This discovery has prompted further scrutiny into the methods employed by the Chinese company.

Did Chinese AI Startup DeepSeek Steal OpenAI's $100 Million AI Model?

OpenAI's Concerns Over Data Use

OpenAI informed the Financial Times about evidence suggesting DeepSeek utilised distillation. This technique involves training smaller AI models using data from larger ones. While this method is cost-effective, it breaches OpenAI's terms if used to create competing models. The company spent over $100 million developing GPT-4, making any unauthorised use of its data a serious concern.

The irony of the situation is not lost on observers. OpenAI itself advanced its GPT model by accessing vast amounts of online content without explicit permission. This historical context adds complexity to the current allegations against DeepSeek.

Reactions from Industry Experts

David Sacks, President Donald Trump's former AI czar, commented on the situation. He stated, "it is possible" that intellectual property theft occurred. Sacks told Fox News that there is "substantial evidence" indicating DeepSeek extracted knowledge from OpenAI models, which likely displeases OpenAI.

OpenAI expressed concerns about companies based in China and elsewhere attempting to distill US AI models. In a statement to Bloomberg, they emphasised their commitment to protecting intellectual property through countermeasures and collaboration with the US government.

The statement highlighted the importance of safeguarding advanced AI capabilities from adversaries and competitors seeking US technology. As a leading AI developer, OpenAI continues to refine its strategies for securing its innovations and maintaining competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
