Amazon Invests $2.75 Billion in ChatGPT, Google AI Rival Anthropic, Spending a Total of $4 Billion

As Amazon strengthens its ties with artificial intelligence (AI) start-up Anthropic, the company has recently increased its investment by $2.75 billion.

This move comes six months after its initial investment of $1.25 billion, making Anthropic one of Amazon's key AI collaborators. Amazon's total possible investment in Anthropic could reach $4 billion, as indicated in financial filings.

Amazon Invests $2.75 Billion in AI Start-up Anthropic

Amazon's Collaboration with Anthropic

Anthropic, a competitor to giants like OpenAI and Google, has seen significant financial backing, necessary to compete in the rapidly advancing field of AI. Swami Sivasubramanian, an Amazon executive, expressed confidence in the partnership enhancing customer experiences.

This collaboration includes access to AI systems and pledges of computing power, although it steers clear of acquisitions that might attract antitrust scrutiny. Furthermore, amidst these developments, Anthropic has distanced itself from a problematic investor, FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange now bankrupt.

FTX, which invested $500 million in Anthropic in 2021 for an 8 percent share, saw its stake sold following a federal judge's approval last week. The sale amounted to $884 million, with significant parts purchased by firms including ATIC Third International Investment Co. and the Ford Foundation.

A Multifaceted Investment

Anthropic's valuation has impressively tripled to $15 billion within a year, underscoring the startup's rapid growth since its inception by former OpenAI researchers in 2021. These researchers started Anthropic due to concerns about OpenAI's close partnership with Microsoft, aiming to create an alternative in the AI space.

Amazon's investment in Anthropic is multifaceted, focusing on the development of AI using Amazon's specialized computer chips. This partnership also grants Amazon early access to Anthropic's AI models, such as Claude 3, for its cloud computing service customers.

Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, highlighted Anthropic's role as a significant competitor in the AI market, emphasizing its potential benefits for the public and market competition. With the Federal Trade Commission initiating inquiries into large AI deals for potential competition issues, Amazon and Anthropic's collaboration represents a careful navigation of the competitive AI landscape.
