‘Apple Is No Longer Creative!’ Nothing CEO Carl Pei Says Apple Lacks its Former Creative Spark
Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of the tech company Nothing, has voiced his dissatisfaction with Apple's current innovation strategy. Once a source of inspiration for him, Apple now seems to lack its former creative spark. In an interview with Wired, Pei shared his thoughts on how the iPhone maker has changed over time.
Pei reminisced about Apple's early innovations like the iPod and the first iPhone, which motivated him to enter the tech industry. However, he feels that Apple has become "very big and very corporate," losing its appeal to younger generations. "Personally, I was very inspired by Apple when I was younger - the first iPod, the first iPhone - that's the reason I'm in this industry. But now the creative companies of the past have become very big and very corporate, and they're no longer very creative," Pei told Wired.

Apple's AI Strategy Under Scrutiny
Pei specifically criticised Apple's AI strategy, particularly concerning Apple Intelligence's rollout in 2024. Despite Apple's bold claims about redefining smartphone experiences, Pei believes these promises have not been fulfilled. "Last year, they told a very big story about Apple Intelligence. Now, a year later, it's not much more than some generated emojis. So it's made consumers very sceptical," he said.
Despite his criticism of Apple, Pei remains optimistic about AI's potential impact on smartphones' future. He emphasises that AI should address real user problems rather than being used as a buzzword for media or investors. "We want the product to be the story," he added.
The Future of Smartphones
Pei envisions significant changes in smartphone usage over the next decade. He predicts a future where operating systems evolve into intelligent layers that deeply understand users and take proactive actions. "The system knows your situation, time, place, and schedule, and it suggests what you should do," he explained.
This transformation won't occur overnight. Pei acknowledges that eliminating apps from smartphones is not feasible at present. "At this point, if we said, 'We have eliminated apps from smartphones,' no one would buy it," he noted. Instead, he foresees this evolution happening gradually over seven to ten years as user trust grows.
Creativity as a Competitive Edge
As AI integration into everyday devices progresses, Pei believes smaller companies like Nothing have an edge in taking creative risks. "We have to be - if we don't have industrial scale, we need creativity to remain competitive in this industry." Recently, Nothing launched its Phone 3a series and continues expanding its ecosystem through its affordable sub-brand (CMF) and audio products.
In summary, while Carl Pei criticises Apple's current approach to innovation and AI strategy, he remains hopeful about AI's role in shaping future smartphones. He sees creativity as essential for smaller companies like Nothing to stay competitive in an evolving industry landscape.
