Apple Secures a Multimillion Deal With Shutterstock to Acquire Images for AI Training

Apple has recently inked a deal with Shutterstock, securing licenses for millions of images to train artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The agreement, valued between $25-50 million, is part of a broader trend where tech giants seek legal routes to acquire content for AI development. This strategy aims to mitigate copyright concerns associated with web-scraped data. Notably, Reuters reported that other industry players like Meta, Google, and Amazon have pursued similar agreements with Shutterstock.

In addition to this latest move, Apple is reportedly been actively engaging with news publishers, including The New Yorker, NBC News, and The Daily Beast, to license articles for AI training.

Apple's AI Collaborations and Developments Further highlighting Apple's AI ambitions, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed ongoing discussions between Apple and Google. These talks focus on the potential licensing of Google's Gemini, a generative AI model, for integration into the forthcoming iPhone 16 series, slated for a September release. This partnership could enhance Apple's AI capabilities while supporting Google's AI strategy. Notably, Samsung has already introduced AI features in its 2024 flagship models, powered by Gemini.

Despite these collaborations, Apple is not solely reliant on external AI models. The company has made significant strides in AI through the acquisition of 32 AI startups in 2023 alone, outpacing Google's 21. This aggressive expansion reflects Apple's dedication to developing its AI technology in the already fierce AI race.

Apple's Focus on AI Apple's internal AI initiatives have also gained momentum. CEO Tim Cook announced a focus on generative AI advancements in 2024, following the decision to shift resources from a longstanding car project to AI development. Reports from Gurman indicate Apple is working on a large language model known as Ajax, alongside a basic chatbot named Apple GPT.
