Apple's $95 Million Payout: Were You Spied On By Siri? Find Out Now!

Apple has reached a $95 million settlement agreement with users whose private conversations were inadvertently recorded by its Siri voice assistant. This settlement, reported by Bloomberg, could compensate many US-based Apple product owners up to $20 per device for up to five Siri-enabled devices. However, this agreement still awaits judicial approval.

The settlement applies to a specific group of US residents who owned or purchased Siri-enabled devices like iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod touches, or Apple TVs between September 17th, 2014, and December 31st, 2024. To qualify for compensation, users must declare under oath that they unintentionally activated Siri during a private conversation.

Apple Accused of Spying with Siri— $95 Million Settlement Reached!

Accidental Activations and Privacy Concerns

The number of claimants will determine the individual payout amounts. Therefore, applicants might receive less than the maximum $20 cap if many people file claims. The initial lawsuit against Apple followed a 2019 report by The Guardian. This report alleged that Apple's third-party contractors "regularly hear confidential medical information, drug deals, and recordings of couples having sex" while working on Siri quality control.

Siri is designed to activate with a specific wake word. However, a whistleblower revealed that accidental activations were frequent. Simple sounds like a zipper could trigger Siri. In response to these allegations, Apple informed The Guardian that only a small fraction of Siri recordings was shared with contractors. Subsequently, Apple issued an apology and ceased retaining audio recordings.

Legal Implications for Tech Giants

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit included a minor who claimed their iPhones recorded them multiple times using Siri without saying the wake word. This case highlights broader privacy concerns associated with voice assistants and their potential to capture unintended audio.

Apple isn't alone in facing such accusations; Google and Amazon have also been criticised for allowing contractors to listen to recorded conversations. These include those captured accidentally.

A similar lawsuit against Google is currently pending. This settlement underscores the importance of addressing privacy issues related to voice-activated technology. As companies continue developing these technologies, ensuring user privacy remains paramount.
