ChatGPT Down for Several Users Across the Globe: OpenAI API and Sora Impacted also Impacted

OpenAI is currently facing a major outage globally. The issue isn't just impacting the popular ChatGPT AI chatbot but has also affected other platforms like OpenAI's API and Sora, the company's video generation tool.

OpenAI's official account posted on X in the early hours of Thursday, December 12, "We're experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we'll keep you updated."

12-Days of Downtime

Several users X have voiced their frustration at the platform, while others have poked fun of OpenAI as the outage comes during the company's 12-day event. One user on X (Ananay) wrote, "12 days (of downtime) of OpenAI."

To recall, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman promised new announcements everyday for 12 days, starting December 5. While several users have been unable to access ChatGPT, some have complained about login issues and other about slow performance.

Is ChatGPT Still Down?

We also faced an error while attempting to log into ChatGPT, although the platform appears to be working properly when selecting the 'Try First' option. It is worth noting that OpenAI is yet to confirm a fix, so it appears that the issue isn't resolved for a vast majority of users.

As of now, OpenAI hasn't provided any timeline for a fix. However, an OpenAI engineer posted, "We have reports of API calls returning errors, and difficulties logging in to platform dot openai dot com and ChatGPT. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. We have identified the issue and are rolling out a remediation. We are working as fast as we can to return service to normal and apologize for the downtime.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks major online outages, recently reported around 30,000 complaints from ChatGPT users. The disruption to OpenAI comes shortly after social media giant Meta faced multiple outages across all its platforms.
