Digital Arrest Scam: Indian Government Blocks Thousands of WhatsApp and Skype Accounts
Digital arrest scams are on the rise, with scammers posing as law enforcement to extort money from unsuspecting victims. To combat this, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a caller tune campaign in various languages to raise awareness. Many people might already be familiar with this initiative.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken significant steps to address these scams. Union Minister Sanjay Bandi Kumar announced that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has successfully identified and blocked over 3,962 Skype IDs and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts linked to these fraudulent activities.

Government Initiatives Against Cyber Crime
To further tackle digital arrest scams, the government is using multiple platforms for awareness. These include newspaper advertisements, announcements in Delhi Metro, social media influencers, and CyberDost social media profiles. Additionally, caller tunes promoting the Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930 are being used.
The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that by February 28, 2025, more than 7.81 lakh SIM cards and 2,08,469 IMEIs have been blocked based on reports from police authorities across India. This action is part of a broader strategy to curb cybercrimes effectively.
